Amongst other things, Pete says in his fine post: > Guess the "SAME WAY Every Day Carry" folks would really get concerned > when I > put my G-27 into a heavy winter jacket pocket with my hand around it, > instead > of the usual under the jacket FBI carry huh?? Or stuff a single action > .45Colt, or D-A .45Colt cross draw at just above belt level and have > it ready inches > from, or in my hand underneath a jacket while using the local ATMs > late at nite. As someone who has been given a fair amount of grief over the years for "being paranoid," it's great to encounter a fellow traveler. > I remember triaging a respiratory arrest in the middle of a local > street > last year and wondering why everyone was nicely backed away 20' or so > and not up > close rubber necking the poor bastard lying there dying like normally > happens. > Might have had something to do with the Glock and ASP baton sticking > out > the back of my belt line under a tank top, which I completely had > forgotten > about in the heat of the moment....... I had kinda the opposite experience 15 or so years ago. Just off the turnip truck from Wisconsin I walked out the front on Union Station in DC and encountered a fellow who appeared to be in full arrest laying on the pavement. Bunch of nitwits in business suits were standing around staring. I opened his airway, couldn't find a pulse and started the 15/2 CPR that was the solo norm back then. I'd taken off a shoulder bag with sundry items in it; as I worked on the guy I felt someone trying to sidle up behind me, my guess is to do a grab and run. Gave the bozo an evil look and secured the bag and then went back to work. Welcome to Marion Barry's DC. At one point the guy on the pavement kinda seized a little, took a deep breath, and opened his eyes, looking wildly around. All the business suit boneheads started clapping, which totally pissed me off. If I wasn't otherwise occupied I probably would have stomped one of the arrogant spectating puds just on general principle. The whole thing turned into a no good deed goes unpunished sort of gig I won't bore you with the details of. When all was said and done I remember heading over to an Irish pub just north of Union Station and ordering a Guinness for strictly antiseptic reasons and being absolutely scandalized when they charged me $8.50 for a freaking beer. Hells bells Toto, we sure ain't in Wisco anymore. > This also applies with edged defensive implements, a little blade in > your > hand is a hell of a suprise to someone eyeballing the other one > clipped in your > pocket...... I started carrying two EDC's about three years ago for > just that > reason. But, but, but deceit and misdirection isn't fair and I'm sure the Queensbury rules forbids it. Steven writes: > When asked by a cop why I am carrying > whatever I am carrying my usual response is because I > can. In the US offering any explanation for what you > are legally doing could be twisted around and used > against you in court. When in doubt say these words "I > have nothing to say.". The burden of proof is on them. That view cuts both ways. Back in my JD days I was sitting in the police station for fairly innocent reasons when a state cop dragged in a mussed up guy. The local cop I was with asked the Trooper what he'd arrested the guy for. "POC" was the Trooper's reply. Found out later POC stood for "Pissin' Off a Cop." Sometimes you gotta walk a fine line. . . . Tom writes a parable that ends: > Moral,.. be careful carrying around KillerKommandoKnives. You may end > up in a > small cell and unhappy. No disagreement on my end. Get to feeling like a broken record sometime, though: all this stuff is contextual. I've got all sorts of blades that I carry in all sorts of circumstances. Probably a sign of maturity that I stopped going places where I might have worn a KillerKommandoKnife, but hey, you never know when the context will change abruptly. Ray sez: > A point that Mas Ayoob was making 20+ years @ LFI. If you carry a > knife > don't carry one specially designed for killing or combat, especially > one > with an interesting name like Combat Elite or Ole Blood -n- Guts or ... > > I cannot recommend his LFI-I or the Judicious Use of Deadly Force > classes > enough. fyi... > > Judicious Use of Deadly Force > Tuition - $350.00 Great, something else to spend several "C" notes on. One of these days I gotta get me a cheap hobby. Animal inspires a cringe with: > Ummmm.... to begin with I have been cussed out by knife sharpeners on > three > contienents for what I do to blades. To me a knife is a tool...and I > use > and abuse them as such. Since I am famous for rolling the edges when I > try > to sharpen I take them to people who don't and have them put an edge > back on > them. When they say "what were you doing? Chopping ice?" my response is > "Yeah, so?" I had a job to do and I did it with the tools at hand. > That's > why I'm there to have it sharpened. Bottomline, how sharp or how dull > your > blade is is pretty much up to you and how well you maintain it. Use to drive me crazy in kitchens what people would do to a knife: "Hand me the 16 inch slicer so I can pry up this floor drain and scoop out all the gunk inside with it." And yeah, beating on blocks of ice was always in vogue. Sorry, Marc, but I think they reserve a special circle of hell for folks who do that stuff. I always urge people to make sure they have the biggest freaking sharpening steel they can find in their kitchen so if the need arises to smack the snot out of something there'll be a tool at hand to do it with other than the French knife. Sharpening with a steel also magnetizes it so you can use it to fish for that critical little screw you dropped in the disposal. It's also kinda fun to play espada y daga with a boning knife and big steel, and if you have to open a can of whup tush with 'em you can avoid KillerKommando connotations mentioned in Animal's post and elsewhere. Frankly, because I can't carry a firearm into anyplace in Texas that makes 51% or more of their revenue from alcohol sales. Or a school, or any number of other location. I will always back away from a fight if I can; I carry for those times that I can't run. And if I need it, I want a damn good knife at my side, not the one I've just used to open 100 cardboard cartons at work. It's a cliche, but I'd rather be judged by twelve than carried by six. If my 4" Cold Steel knife puts me in the defendant's seat instead of in the pine box, so be it. But knowing Texans, I doubt that'll happen. :-) If I get stopped by Johnny Law, and asked why I carry two knives, I'll reply that I always carry Mr Steel, and the utility knife I use at work to open boxes. That's all he needs to know. Unless he finds a real reason to drag me downtown (such as a blade greater than 5.5" in the state of Texas), he's got no probable cause, only a suspicion. Yes, I know that probable cause is a nebulous thing, but I'm banking on it not being worth his time to carry an otherwise reasonable and respectful individual downtown over a Tactical Combat Extreme Fighting Knife. Carrying one knife for fighting (since apparently defence is out of the question) and one for utility purposes does not automatically imply that you're running around looking to get into a knife fight. Frankly, your actions before, during, and after the fight are going to speak much more loudly than the actual piece of steel you're carrying. Finally, in the last year, I've had my knife in my adrenalized hand twice. Once was a situation where three young toughs crossed an otherwise empty street towards me. I had a jacket, and when they began to cross, I palmed the knife and held it in my jacket pocket. It turns out they were headed for the building I was in front of. The second was when I lent some jumper cables to a gang-banger wannabe friend of my neighbor. When I handed them to him, he aggressively hugged me. At this point, I was carrying a Hideaway Knife in my pocket, basically a loop around your fingers with a blade hanging off it (www.hideawayknife.com). By the time he completed the hug, I had it drawn and ready to go into blade-assisted grapple mode when he told me the cops were about to tow his car, and I just saved him a bunch of money. He let go, and I hid the knife. So in my very humble experience, it is possible to draw if you keep your head about you. First, go to Mandaue City and ask Jeepney Drivers where Doce Pares HQ is located and you can find what you are looking. Second, if you are close to Basilica Del Sto. Nino - few people (along the streets) sell sticks - I hope they're still there and/or close to the Cebu City Hall. There is also a Balintawak School along Colon Street - that is I don't know the exact address. Best bet is to ask Jeepney or Taxi drivers that you are looking for "special equipments". Furthermore, 3 Universities might also be good places to ask - San Carlos University, University of The Visayas and University Of San Jose Recoletos because are lots of Eskrima/Arnis/Kali students in those schools that I mentioned. I hope this helps. Good Luck. It would be a shame to leave here and not bring anything home. I did find a coulble balisong, but they were of very poor quality, nothing that I would like to have. Does any one know of a place where I can find some toys? Thanks" You should be able to get some decent swords from Doce Pares Headquarter, just ask most taxi drivers for Attny Canete's place. Try the basement of the Shoemart dept store in Cebu City Shoemart Mall. They actually carry a decent collection of all size balisongs up to 24" depending on their current stock and whether or not one of us beat you there and bought them up. They by them from a factory in Manila. Say hi to Joni. Some of the handicraft stores in the malls also carry a limited selection of some fairly nice knives, ect. The better the selection in the store, the better the quality of the knives. There is also a guy in the traffic circle where Osmena Blvd and Mango Ave meet just south of Escario, who hand makes good serviceable swords, sets up on the streetside. Check the street sign pole where he sets up. He will usually demonstrate by taking chunks out of the poles. Decent handmade stuff, even Kampilans. I got a large bolo for around $8. He's been there for several years. ( particularly around outside gaisano metro area );sometimes you can find vendors around the side street of fuente osmena that sells balisongs and baliswords (2-3 feet long) some of them from batangas. you can buy escrima sticks at any furniture place ( shops that makes furniture sp. rattan chairs); i think P20.00 for a long pole of rattan and just ask them to cut it for you. that would give you a couple of pairs for $0.35 cents; training knives and real native bolos, pinuti etc. can be find at any blacksmith on the side street going to basak. --__--__-- Message: 8 From: "Shawn Keren" To: Subject: Re: [Eskrima] Fighting knives Date: Fri, 25 Mar 2005 08:00:39 -0800 Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Woody makes some great points here. Living in Oregon it's actually considered illegal to carry a knife "concealed". I carry my Spiderco clipped to my hip pocket. I've asked cops and have been told that they generally wouldn't consider it concealed. Oregon requires a concealed weapons permit to carry a handgun, which I have but choose not to carry due to the fact that I teach MA at some of the public schools. As for my folder I generally leave it in the car when I go to the schools. I wouldn't feel as safe leaving a handgun in the car. (Lots of auto break-ins and thefts here.) Most cops don't even question the knife here as long as you're a normal, respectful person. While I don't kowtow to the cops I treat them with respect as I've worked with them during my time involved with the local Police Activities League (most of them are decent folks around here.) I've even accidently carried my folder to the county courthouse by mistake, taken it out of my pocket when going through security and asked one of the officers to hang onto it for me. He opened it, looked at me and said "thanks, it'll be here when you come back through" and it was. I do use my folder to open boxes but only if I don't have anything else around to use, which I generally do. Like Woody, I'd rather be in the defendants chair than in the ground, so if the need arises and I'm unable to avoid, it'll come out. Fortunately that hasn't been an issue and hopefully it never will be. "For all life is precious, nor can we replace any."
