I'm a Ranger and I carry a knife merely to use at work. I use it for everything from cutting rope, sharpening pegs, scraping off algae, breaking into my locker when I've forgotten my keys... Unfortunately, being a limey and the laws being a lot stricter over here I get frowned upon if I carry one of my fixed blade knives, so I carry a folder, namely the CRKT Ryan 7, which happens to be the safest lock knife I've used. The abuse my knives usually get has meant that the blades usually fold if I want them to or not! My Ryan 7 hasn't yet, and it's seen more abuse than most of my knives! There may be other knives out there that are likewise, but I've not got one...yet. --__--__-- Message: 3 From: "Ste Ormerod" To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Date: Sat, 26 Mar 2005 14:52:19 +0000 Subject: [Eskrima] RE: fighting knives Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi everyone, As for carrying two knives, one for fighting and one for work, I find that if the proverbial hits the fan then my knife is still sharp enough to do the deed even after a hard days work. As for the edge being dulled, well I keep it pretty sharp, but the point is what I'm after, I'm not going to fanny around with some scum bag who pulls a knife on me (or worse), I'm going to put the business end of my knife into him. End of story. Slashing although good for cutting someone doesn't end the fight. Thrusting does. Because it is a piece of art, a collectible. Such items are not carried for everyday use. They are never sharpened and the original packaging is never lost. Why? They are an investment. If selected carefully their value will greatly increase, if used or sharpened their value drops. I have a collectible blade or two (or three or four), but far more collectible coins, guns, and if I had a lot more $$ I'd love to find a '62 Corvette to restore. :) For everyday carry I have two on me at all times. Together they may have cost me ~ $100. Regardless of how many you carry, or for what reason, make sure you are able access each one with either hand. Having a blade that you cannot reach because you can only access it with your right hand, which you may find otherwise occupied, is neither good planning nor good eskrima.
