But that's just me. Like you,if I had more dough Id prob have many thousands of $ invested in blades and guns.I do go online and dream though.... I started carrying 2 knives after I found myself in a training drill on the ground with my (rubber) service weapon in my right hand and unable to access my folder with my left as it was in my right pocket. Things that make you think. --__--__-- Message: 3 From: Afern27@aol.com Date: Sun, 27 Mar 2005 10:46:05 EST To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Re: fighting knives and "slash vs. thrust" Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net I could be wrong...but doesn't the historical record show that slashing results in just as many fatal wounds as thrusting? Maybe even more so? --__--__-- Message: 4 From: "Ste Ormerod" To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Date: Sun, 27 Mar 2005 16:15:18 +0000 Subject: [Eskrima] RE: Knives Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Even so a thrust to the throat would be more effective. Lots of thrusts even more so. Slashes rely on good targeting. You could still miss an artery. A thrust has more chance of stopping someone. One is a simple locking folder that I use as a tool, since I am out in the woods and/or at a lake as much as possible, hiking or fishing. The other is my business blade, and I take it if I'm going into an area I don't know. It will either be a balisong, or an old fixed blade Western hunter that a student of mine gave me years ago. I understand that a knife like Ryan 7 would be considered illegal in UK - how do you get away with it? Michael Koblic, Campbell River, B. I tried sending knives and balisongs to my friends via mail, UPS and FEDEX, I was turned down all the time. I have heard that a thrust to the heart will stop someone but what I have witnessed is contrary to that. I saw a fight where a guy ended up mounted and punching another guy to a bloody pulp until the guy on the bottom started laughing which caused the puncher to stop...the guy on the bottom had been stabbing the puncher in the chest the whole time. The puncher died eventually but had he been using a weapon the guy on the bottom would have been toast also. When the adrenalin is pumping being stabbed feels like being punched. In that fight I saw the puncher never knew he was being stabbed until he stopped punching. Now the one time I have used a knife in an altercation I made 2 extremity cuts, one on the wrist to release a grip and another between the thumb and index finger. I was being held by three people and one of them was choking me. I cut the guy trying to take my knife away. When he started screaming and the blood started spraying the whole fight stopped. My personal opinion on the matter now is that the fight stopped because the wound was visual. This is what I was taught to do and it is what I teach to do. Defang the snake WORKS. When I was in that situation I cleary saw the options, start killing people or just do enough damage to get out alive. I think I made the right choice that night because no one died that night. Don't take this post as bragging because it isn't, I am just relating my experience for the benefit of the forum. See the well known April 1986 FBI encounter with Platt and Maddox in Maimi, FL as one heavily studied example. > Please visit http://www.stormfront.org and http://www.whitecivilrights.com/ Are you for real with this David Duke stuff?!? Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net I went back to the Philippines last August and I had quite an inventory to bring back to the States and I did not have any problems. Maybe it was just good timing but who knows. I declared them as gifts and souvenirs and packed them in my checked baggage(cardboard boxes to be accurate). The baggage screener from the Philippine airport had my luggage sealed with nylon straps(the kind that you see on cargo/freight packages)to make it tamper proof. Entry into the States(JFK airport) was no problem. I was pulled to the side due to some concerns when I also declared that i was carrying food in the boxes. I was cleared when I said these were all canned and commercially prepared and packaged goods. To the curious here is my list: 4 uwas (aka goloks) 3 matulis 1 san bartolome bolo 2 sungut ulang (like a matulis but much longer) 10 latikos (horse whips) 3 cheap balisongs 1 kris balisong 4 good quality balisongs 1 2' balisong 1 3' balisong I'm sure every experience is unique and this was mine. All these were distributed between six checked-in luggages that my wife, son and myself carried. Hope this helps.
