Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi all, thought i'd comment. Met Mark Wiley, trained with him when he was over here (england), very nice guy, genuine, friendly. From my point of view, no one elses, so send all off list complaints to me, the book is a genuine attempt at providing general information on a subject that some readers would find of interest. Sadly some of the reviews reflect a great deal of bullshit on different sides showing what happens when politics get involved in martial arts. I should know, I've practiced wing chun ;) Surely our legitimacy rests in our skill at our art. Let the debate ensue!!! Regards, Matthew Barclay. A friend was wearing a FMA T-shirt while standing in line in Chicago. Behind him was an old Filipino man that asked him if he studied FMA. They started up a conversation and the old timer invited him to come over to his house and learn their family system. If I remember the story right, the system didn't even have a name, it was just something they learned father to son. It turned out to be a really cool knife system. It was unlike anything he had yet seen. One day he had the chance to meet the man's adult son and my friend got a chance to see father and son go at it (drills) in the kitchen with live blades. These guys weren't MA teachers or known at all in MA circles, the old guy was a retired fireman. He attributed the whole experience to that one T-shirt. See you in the sticks, Dale --__--__-- Message: 4 Date: Wed, 30 Mar 2005 17:38:05 -0800 (PST) From: Brian Hamilton To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] shirts etc Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net "Actually, if you look at it objectively, we *are* insane people ;-) As Itold a guy once at a seminar, study of the MA is a form of sadomasochism. Think about it. Not only do we enjoy giving and receiving pain - we paypeople to teach us to do it better and, eventually, get paid to teach othersto do it better."-Mike --snip-- Ahhh and we all think of Cimande, rub our arms and smile ;) As for shirts I rarely wear much MA shirts, though I do wear a Bando one on laundary day but I live in Bando country (Athens, OH) so everyone does it here. I do have one particular shirt that *always* raises eyebrowns "Anti-Gun People Suck" it garners fun responses ;) Mostly from MA people. To tag my response to the knife thread. I love balisongs but they have such a bad rep I carry an AFCK Benchmade and have never had any beef from cops. Though I'm Mr. "Please and Thank You" they don't need a Billy Bad-Ass giving them grief, it's a hard job. Mr. MacYoung made me thing about what AFCK means "Advanced Folding Combat Knife"...*groan* but I love that knive :( I *never* carry straight blades, I think that casts a wrong image even though that would be my preference, no opening. I also don't have a CCW since I live just off a college campus and in Ohio the CCW is only firearms not batons, bali's etc. Strange huh? lots of two cents here -Brian __________________________________ Do you Yahoo!?
