Re: European PAL (Bill Lowery) --__--__-- Message: 1 Subject: RE: [Eskrima] The Grandfathers Speak part three Date: Wed, 20 Apr 2005 09:20:21 +0300 From: To: Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi, I haven't tried that perticular DVD, but it's usually like this: DVD players come encoded to a certain region, which in the US is 1 and in the Europe 2. In some players, modifications can be made to set this to 0 which means that the player can play disks from any region. Some disks, however have an advanced region code used in them, which works so that the disk tries to play a chapter on the disk encoded with a different region code than the actual program on the disk. If the chapter plays, it means that the player is region code free and the rest of the disk doesn't play. This can be bypassed with a manual setting of the region code in the player, if you set a region 2 player manually to region 1, not region 0, even those disks play OK. Then the disks themselves also have a region code. If it's set to 1, the disk will only play on players also set to 1 or 0. The PAL/NTSC thing refers to the signal standard, you can see the difference here: http://www.high-techproductions.com/pal,ntsc.htm. Most modern TV sets and DVD players play PAL and NTSC without problems. The region code has no effect to this. So, in conclusion, if you have disk that has region code 0 with NTSC encoding, it should play OK in European players, if you a) have a TV set that also plays NTSC or b) have a player that converts outcoming (into the TV) signal to PAL I think it should technically be very easy to make a master DVD with a PAL signal encoding as well, if needed. I hope this clarifies the matter a bit. - Marko > -----Original Message----- > From: ext Marc Denny [mailto:craftydog@dogbrothers.com] > Sent: 20 April, 2005 09:47 > To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net > Cc: Cindy Denny > Subject: [Eskrima] The Grandfathers Speak part three > > > Woof All > > > Hi Marc, > > > > Obvious question. Academy of Martial Arts Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net If it's encoded in PAL format then it won't. The difference between PAL and NTSC is frame rate. If memory serves (and a quick google search would probably answer this definitively) PAL is 26 frames per second and NTSC is 29. So if it's PAL encoded it will not play right on our NTSC players - it'll look like the vertical hold is screwed up (I think). I think most players sold in Europe will play either format - and often will be able to automatically determine which they need to use. In America, unless we go to some special effort, we get players that will *only* play NTSC format. The region encoding is also important but a region free DVD with PAL formatted video content still won't play on an NTSC player.
