The only "obviously available" item you might have missed was carry on luggage or large handbag (same concept as the laptop, which may or may not be in a case). A couple of improvised weapons of opportunity--food/drink cart and seat belt extensions which have a heavy metal buckle at one end. The attendants usually know where these are. Initially, some of these might seem innocuous, but also think "gang-tackle." Jay de Leon Mike Casto wrote: Magazine, meal tray, drink can, water bottle, coffee carafe (not sure if they still have those on planes or not), coffee, blanket, clothing, laptop, cell phone, pen, pencil. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net You should keep in mind thought that computer DVD drives are region locked just like stand-alone players. Most will allow you 5 changes of region before they lock. Hacked firmware for some drives can be found on the net that will disable the region locking. The Phillips 642 standalone DVD player I have will play both NTSC and PAL format DVDs and can be made region free with a code entered on the remote (plays most divx files as well). Another option for those wishing to release video material playable in different regions and formats is to make available an SVCD or VCD version. I'd say almost all DVD players will play VCDs and most new players will play SVCDs as well. If your player can play VCD 2.0 standard it can play both PAL & NTSC VCDs. If it can play SVCDs the same is true (and there is no region encoding of these formats). My current DVD player and my old Pioneer 343 will both play VCD & SVCD discs. Most low end players will play these formats, as well computers with DVD software can play them. www.videohelp.com has a big list of DVD players with ratings, reviews, and playable formats for each model. > BUT there is a way: You can play all PAL DVDs on your Laptop and > computer in the US, > because the computers have nothing to do with the TV- standards like > PAL, NTSC or SECAM in France. --__--__-- Message: 4 Subject: RE: [Eskrima] Shinunju Date: Fri, 22 Apr 2005 09:40:20 -0400 From: "Clint Cayson" To: Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi Peter, Thanks for reading. Since I watched that movie (years ago) I was kind of convinced that the Art was actually a made up Hollywood flick because I never heard of it or shall I say popular before. Until now? Anyway, I searched (google) the art and there is/was a person that practiced Shinanju. Here's the thread. http://www.doofus.org/Robo/book/BG/Politic/ah.html it's a little bit long read though. Thanks for reading. Clint ---- skipped---- I remember the movie and you are correct. In the movie the guy survives on rice and trains under an old korean guy. He also learns to do just about everything except walk on water - possibly this is reserved for advance shinunju training - just joking. Any info??? Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net I would like to supplement my FMA training with some cardiovascular work and perhaps throw in some calesthenics as well. A guy at work suggested some material by a guy named Matt Furey. He gave me the website (www.mattfurey.com) and I looked at what what Mr. Furey had to offer. He sounds pretty legit but I'm just not sure. I mean, as you all know there's always a small number of people who are willing to take your money by whatever means and its sad that we have to be so untrusting in this society. Is anyone familiar with this guy or have any insider knowledge, personal experience, first-hand interactions with his excersie routines? Padilla street. A registration fee of P500 each was collected for each student, who will be trained for until middle of May. Those who enrolled are kids living near the C. Padilla area and barangays San Nicolas, Duljo-Fatima and Sawang Calero. One of the trainors is Chuck Canete, grandson of eskrima grandmaster Ciriaco "Cacoy" Canete. Meanwhile, the Cacoy Doce Pares group is also busy honing Cebuano participants for the forthcoming eskrima World Convention to be held in Los Angeles, California come June. It will be Cebu City councilor Sylvan "Jack" Jakosalem, who will finalize the lineup of athletes to be sent to L.A. because they will be sponsored by the Cebu City Government. In a related development, the Cacoy Doce Pares is drawing up plans of training all the barangay tanods from both the south and north districts to enhance their self-defense skills. The tanods from the south will be trained at the Plaza Abellana gym in barangay San Nicolas while those coming from the north will be trained at the Cebu City Sports Complex. --__--__-- Message: 8 From: "Sonny Padilla" To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: RE: [Eskrima] Cattle Prods Date: Fri, 22 Apr 2005 17:45:56 -0600 Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net You can add books, belt and buckle, shoes, scarfs and briefcase. That flaming flight attendant would probably make a good distraction.... Actually, I read an interesting tactic in (of all things) Maxim magazine. If you're between the hijacker and the cockpit, lie down on your back in the aisle, feet towards him. Makes it kinda difficult to get to your vitals without a "boot to the head". I've got a herniated disk in my neck, and I did his stuff (I also grappled a lot, and took more than one boot to the head in my day, so I can't blame Furey). Basically, it's a bunch of high-volume, body-weight calisthenics. Listen to your body as you use it, and you should be fine. Remember, there is a huge difference between cardio, calisthenics, and aerobics.
