Then again, we Filipinos have this cultural trait of telling tall tales. We even have a modern coined term for it--"istir", taken from the English word "to stir". For example, when my college fraternity brothers gather over beer and food and tell funny and/or amazing stories about their or other brods' exploits, we call it "istiran". That is, not to be taken too seriously, although perhaps with some basis in fact. There is indeed a cave in Sudlon, Cebu which could be the "Doce Pares" or Decuerdas tunnel cave. Only that it could not possibly have been rigged with weapons and dangerous stuff that could kill an eskrimador. Ever practical, Filipinos would rather test skill with live duels (juego todo) rather than with unusual and complicated contraptions in a dark cave. The cave could have been simply used as a setting for a tall tale to impress the first western students of the Dizon lineage. Sort of like the Shaolin kungfu legends that first got us into the martial arts as kids. I am originally from the Stockton California area and visiting the Rutherford NJ area this week for work. If there is a Filipino Martial aRts school around that I can visit for a night class before Friday I would love the chance to get to meet some others from this area who have an interest in the FMA. My home now is in Northern Virginia and I work in the Metro DC area and I have been having trouble finding traditional schools. Take Care and stay Sticky. Academy of Martial Arts Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net I know a guy who was a Tunnel Rat in Vietnam. Yes, he definitely has nerves of steel. He's a little guy and very nice. But he's pretty unflappable and when he starts moving, man is he scary. There's zero hesitation in his movements - just pure intent, conviction and commitment to getting the job done (whatever that job is at the time). Marasigan The Manila Bulletin Online Antique will once again celebrate the province's rich culture and the Antiquenos' indomitable spirit as the annual "Binirayan Festival" kicks off today. Now on its 31st year, this year's theme "Kultura kag katiringban: Pagpalayag sa kaaraydan kang Amtique" (Culture and Society: Sailing towards a better quality of life in Antique) remains true to Governor Sally Perez's leadership thrust focusing on culture and arts in her governance. Perez believes that culture binds a people, "it gives them soul and a sense of pride, motivating them to live with dignity by being more productive, law-abiding and morally upright." Through the 3-day festival, Perez aims to strengthen the province's bid as a viable economic and investment hub, tourist destination, and culture and arts haven, thus attracting more local and foreign tourists. Among the activities lined up are nightly talent competitions, band concerts, arnis exhibition, trade fair, food festival, and the Antique Pride Parade. Conceived by Governor Evelio B. Javier in 1974, the Binirayan is a commemoration of the landing and settlement of the 10 Bornean datus in Malandog, Hamtic, the first Malayan settlement long before the occupation of the Philippines by the Spaniards. "Binirayan" came from the word "biray" which means to sail or "binirayan," which means where the datu have landed. The Binirayan Foundation, Inc. (BFI) headed by its executive director Alex C. Delos Santos, assures that this year's Binirayan Festival is something to remember, highlighting the Antiquenos unique traditions and culture. --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima http://eskrima-fma.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/eskrima Copyright 1994-2005: Ray Terry, MartialArtsResource.com, Sudlud.com Standard disclaimers apply.
