It reminded me of my favorite quote by Franklin "They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety." If everyone plays by the rules there is no need for SD, but people don't all the time. I'd rather use SD of any form (positioning, verbal etc.) than trade false comfort from a police state. I guess it's the cost of freedom; having to actively preserve it. Sorry if that droned but, that's as political as I get so my two cents are spent ;) -Brian __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! In recent years, the biennial competition has become bigger than the Asian Games and the Olympics in terms of the number of sports events and gold medals. There were 490 gold medals up for grabs at the 20th SEA Games in Brunei in 1999, 420 golds at the 2001 Games in Malaysia and 450 golds at the previous Games in Vietnam two years ago. It was initially agreed last year that there would be 41 sports events offering 388 gold medals at the 23th Games in the Philippines later this year. However, at a meeting last week member countries added 53 more golds to push the total number of gold medals to 441. While there will be 441 gold medals in 41 sports at the Manila Games for 11 member countries to vie for, there were only 28 sports with around 300 gold medals awarded at the 2004 Olympics in Athens where 202 nations took part. Two of the key principles of the SEA Games are to promote friendship among member nations and provide a sporting venue for members to develop their skill. Unfortunately, the target is far from being reached. There have been too many sports at the SEA Games. The hosts often add their local sports to Southeast Asia's sporting showcase so they stand a better chance of winning gold medals. At the Vietnam Games in 2003, shuttle-cock kicking and fin swimming were included, which are popular in Vietnam. Not surprisingly, the Vietnamese enjoyed a gold-haul in both ''sports.'' For a sport to make its appearance at the SEA Games, it must be supported by at least three member nations. According to Thai officials, Thailand had to back the inclusion of shuttle-cock kicking and fin swimming because the Vietnamese threatened to drop boxing if the Kingdom did not give their approval. There are a lot of combat sports at the SEA Games such as the Islamic martial art pencak silat, Chinese martial art wushu and Japanese martial art karate-do. The three sports offer a total of 57 gold medals at the Philippines Games because each discipline has both dancing and fighting categories. Two more martial arts will make their debut at the Manila Games _ Philippines' arnis and Muay Thai. The Philippines are likely to sweep all six gold medals in arnis, while Thailand are expected to take home all seven golds in Muay Thai. Thai officials proudly proclaimed they were successful in their bid to increase the number of golds in the sports Thai athletes have good chances of winning. Initially, there was going to be four Muay Thai events but the number was increased to seven at last week's SEA Games meeting. However, it's a shame the three added events are for the pre-fight ritual performance (wai khru), which should not be considered a ''sport.'' It seems that everybody just wants to win as many gold medals as possible by pushing anything to become a SEA Games sport. But who can blame the Thai officials? It is all about ''you include your sports, we include ours'' and everybody is happy. Over the years, the SEA Games has been devalued by so-called ''non-standard'' sports. Everybody seems to be happy with winning gold medals at any cost, although golds in some ''sports'' are essentially worthless. Thailand will host the 2007 SEA Games and they should set a new standard of organising only internationally recognised sports. --__--__-- Message: 8 From: "George Storm" To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: Re: [Eskrima] Transplanted "Good Manners, Part 6" Date: Wed, 04 May 2005 18:35:24 -0700 Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net phpBB ?!?
