To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net In one of my trips to RP around the early 90's, I attended an international Penjak Silat tournament in Manila (details and pictures somewhere in my box of archives). Several Asian countries competed, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Brunei, etc. Some of the weapons forms/carenza were impressive and distinctive--kris forms with definite kuntao flavor, etc. There was no weapons sparring. The empty hands sparring looked just like a karate point tournament, complete with red foam (hands and feet) equipment, with no low kicks and no grappling.. Of course, this was about a dozen years ago, things might have changed. To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net What a bummer it must have been to see it watered down to that point. Im sure though that there was no way around it if you want to make it safe enough to be practiced as a sport. Look what happened when Jiu Jitsu became Judo for sport. Not quite the same thing. -Steve Kohn Ray wrote: > "There are a lot of combat sports at the SEA Games such as the Islamic > martial art pencak silat , , ," > > I've never seen combat sport silat. Stuart Brown, Mark Warren, Simon Brown, Keith Brown and Peter Fitzgeorge - team-mates at Hardcore Stix club in Great Yarmouth - have just six weeks before they travel to Berlin for the European Championships. But the club, which was established two years ago, was unable to meet increases in the rent for a room at the Marina Centre and its members are desperate to find a new training venue. The men, who are experts in the Filipino stick-fighting art of eskrima, are currently forced to train on Great Yarmouth beach early in the morning but say a training venue is vital for them to make the necessary preparations. They do not receive any funding and have to meet their own costs for equipment, which includes helmets, gloves and body armour, and the trip to Germany. They must also travel every Sunday to Luton to train with the national team. Stuart is the current world, European and British champion, while Mark is current world champion in the double stick category. Teresa Callender, who is helping the club find a new venue, said: "It is not ideal on the beach but that is the only place that they can train. They're controlled by the weather so some days they can't practice. They really need somewhere to train." The five train 3-4 hours twice a week and because the sport involves fighting with sticks the club needs a room with a high ceiling. Anyone who can help should contact Teresa on 07776 457697 or Karen on 07765 484282. --__--__-- Message: 6 Date: Thu, 5 May 2005 19:21:45 -0700 (PDT) From: Bill McGrath To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] PEKITI-TIRSIA SUMMER CAMP Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Pekiti-Tirsia Summer Camp June 13th to 17th 2005 Fishkill, NY Instructors: Tuhon Bill McGrath and senior instructors of Pekiti-Tirsia International.
