The main governing body in Indonesia is IPSI. There are 2 distinct divisions: forms and fighting The forms are standardised sets that are supposed to give a flavour of all the different styles of silat - a bit like WuShu and chinese martial arts. The fighting side is normally called Ohlaraga and has evolved into something like knockdown karate (full contact- like KyoKushinKai) with points for takedowns. contestants wear a body protector like they use in TKD. Nations that do well are Indonesia & Malaysia, but also Thailand and Vietnam - I guess a Thai boxing background is useful for that sort of thing. They could train on the beach every day! 'cos it NEVER rains in Southern California" Sorry, I should be more serious about these things... The Indonesian and Malaysian governments wanted a sport that would support nationalistic ideals, include colorful local costume, be a healthy exercise for the young, etc. etc. Tradeoffs had to be made. --__--__-- Message: 7 From: Ray Subject: Re: [Eskrima] Full contact Silat? While walking along Leon Kilat near the old ABS-CBN building (which has just been demolished) a woman of about 30 was stopped by two bystanders ("estambay"). One of them asked for money but the woman ignored him. When he insisted, the woman got something from her canvas bag. It was a brass knuckle. She then challenged the man to a fight and they fought. Someone claiming to be a soldier (not a cop) intervened. The fight was stopped but not without the man bleeding from a cut on his forehead caused by the woman's brass knuckle ("pitsekorno"). "Nakasugat gyud ka'g amazon sa arnis club," a passerby told the bleeding estambay. --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima http://eskrima-fma.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/eskrima Copyright 1994-2005: Ray Terry, MartialArtsResource.com, Sudlud.com Standard disclaimers apply.
