I started practicing eskrima shortly after I became involved in learning Wun Hop Kuen Do Kung-fu 20 years ago. My instructor, Al Dacascos, encouraged me to attend the eskrima classes that he offered in order to enhance my understanding of the WHKD and Kajukenbo systems. At that point in time I had no idea that eskrima or any other Filipino arts even existed so I had no idea of the history of these arts. It wasn't until a few years later that I really even started to research that history for my own personal growth in the Filipino arts. The only thing that I knew, or cared about, before that was that the addition of what I was learning had greatly accelerated my learning. Until I started to learn about the history I didn't even realize that the art was a mostly muslim tradition.... Imagine that, me a jew, learning what was mostly an art developed by muslim warriors. I have since come to the realization that this art has given me a much greater respect for my muslim cousins. A few years ago I was asked to go with a small group of FMA practitioners to a Filipino Club dinner at Oregon State University and help put on a demonstration for the members and their families. We had a great time, did our demo and met, ate and talked with the people at the dinner. Many of the people there came and thanked us for sharing their tradition with them and told us how much they appreciated that we had taken the time to learn things that were important to them as a people but that many in their own community had lost touch with. I won't even get into the title thing right now but I may comment in the future..... I grow up in Cagayan De Oro and never heard of a Martial Artist that uses the title of a DATU. Though the question is would it be a good title for martial artists? I may think that the President of the Philippines would give such a title to a certain person with several Noble Muslims as witnesses. Thanks for reading. Salamat din, Clint ======================= The term Datu is obviously not used in the traditional sense, its used as a ranking and sign of respect. Same as Guro, Lakan, Sempai/sempei, etc. GM's may not like or dont ask to be called GM's but it doesn't mean it doesn't exist in the Philippines.(BTW I am filipino). Just my opinion on the matter. Though i am an American Born Filipino, I think that people that the best term to describe a master would be Guro which, if you trace it back far enough, means teacher. In reality that is what those who share FMA are, teachers. Also, at the end of the day, grandmaster or not, a name is a name, what matters is that you show respect for the effort put forth by the individual who took the time to learn and gain the knowledge for his or herself.
