Sy Jr. Every June 12 the whole country celebrates Independence Day and Filipinos show their patriotism by displaying the Philippine flag and remembering the fallen heroes of our native land. However, there are other unspoken heroes that we have to thank for. These are the men who kept alive Filipino martial arts or FMA (arnis, baston, escrima, dumog, etc.) inspite of prohibition by occupying invaders and the punishment of death when caught practicing these arts. Various aspects of Filipino culture have already been preserved -- dances, songs, folklore, literature, etc.-- but not much has been done to preserve the traditional arts of pag-amlig sa kaugalingon (self defense). It's not known to most Filipinos that many of the Filipino soldiers and martyrs who fought for our country against the Spaniards, Americans, and Japanese were exponents of FMA. Dr. Jose Rizal was one of the more popular heroes to be an exponent of arnis as well as Gen. Antonio Luna, Gen. Gregorio del Pilar, Andres Bonifacio, and Fr. Gregorio Aglipay. One of several goals of our conquerors was to erase our identity as Filipinos so they can superimpose their mold of mind. But the freedom loving Filipinos saw it and struggled against it all they can. In countless times, FMA was used by Filipinos to fight foreign oppression. Lapu-Lapu was reputed to be the first Filipino to use FMA to oppose European imperialism. Today, the Philippines is no longer under the threat of an invading army and the new generation had been complacent. They no longer give any value to FMA, the same arts of pag-amlig sa kaugalingon that our forefathers used to defend the mother land. There are still living grandmasters and masters of these arts but for how long? My challenge to the new generation is to take up your native art and continue the legacy started by your forefathers and stand proud as a Filipino. The Filipino martial arts are as good as, if not better, than any other Asian or Western martial arts. I have traveled to at least 20 cities and towns in Negros Occidental (and three in Negros Oriental) documenting the exploits of these men, which I will include in a future book on the various styles of arnis in my province. Let me present to you our dear readers some of the hardcore bastoneros of Negros Occidental. About the Author He holds a bachelor's degree in Marketing Management and is ranked in several forms of martial arts including a number of arnis styles. He is the first multi-style martial arts researcher, scholar, and writer in Western Visayas. Groups in Iloilo interested for their art to be documented can contact the author at 09205003982. --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima http://eskrima-fma.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/eskrima Copyright 1994-2005: Ray Terry, MartialArtsResource.com, Sudlud.com Standard disclaimers apply.
