One of Sifu Al Dacascos' senior students, Leonard Endrizzi, has passed away on June 10, 2005. He had been ill for a while. Leonard had practiced Kajukenbo in Denver, Co. before training in Won Hop Kuen Do with Sifu Dacascos. He married a French Canadian girl and moved to Canada in the 1970's. He moved to Portland Oregon in 1985 and maintained a low profile from that time. He supported me in my search for FMA and shared with me what he had learned in the Filipino arts from Sijo Emperado and others on the west coast. Ironically Al Dacascos thanked me for re-introducing him to the arts of his Filipino heritage on a video series put out by Unique Publications. He mis-spelled my name, but who cares? It is a small world, and I will miss Leonard Endrizzi. Peace my friend. While I haven't been in touch with him much lately he has always been one of my favorite instructors. I think I still have some of his shoe prints on my shins. Do you have any information about the funeral? He had packed up his family, his wife Louisselle, and his daughters Kimberly and Heather and they made the trip to Portland Oregon. Prior to meeting him I had only seen pictures and heard stories about him from Sifu Dacascos and his wife Bettina. I was at the school when they drove up and was the first one to greet them when they came through the door. I had been one of Sifu Dacascos's students for a very short period of time and was a yellow belt when Sifu Leonard came to town. Being so new to martial arts in general I must say that I was very intimidated by Sifu Endrizzi when I first met him. He was a rather large man, both in stature and persona. However when I met him he was so gracious and friendly that much of that feeling went away. He was the kind of instructor that could motivate any student to excel, no matter the physical or mental limitations, he could take them to their full potential. He was there for me when the training was tough in the kwoon, telling me hard in training easy in the street. Teaching me those low line kicks and showing me how even a "big guy" can be light on his feet. Encouraging me to never give up no matter how difficult it got and also letting me know that what I learned wasn't meant for me to keep for myself, but was meant for me to pass along to others, just like he had done. I was glad that he was there for all of my rank tests over the years and I'm very proud of the fact that he ran the testing board when I tested for my black belt. My certificate hangs on my wall at home, where I can see it everyday and Sifu Leonard's signature is there to remind me of all of the things that he gave me over the years. Much of what I have learned about Kajukenbo, Wun Hop Kuen Do and life in general I owe to Sifu Leonard. I know that there is always a line between student and teacher that cannot be crossed, but I consider Sifu Leonard and his family to be part of my family and I considered Sifu Leonard and his wife Louiselle to be my friends as well. I watched his precious little girls and their cute french accents grow into wonderful young women, always kind and respectful to their parents. I know that Sifu Leonard wouldn't want anyone to be sad or dwell on his passing, that's just the kind of man that he was, but I still felt that I needed to put this into writing. I'll miss you Sifu, My friend, my big brother, my father, my teacher, one last salute to you with all my love and respect. The term Grandmaster may not have been commonly used in the Philippines prior to the 70's, but many respectable manongs of the FMA may have found it necessary to adopt the title to help them promote their styles/systems on an international level in western countries where the term is more commonly used among practitioners of the Chinese, Korean and Japanese arts. While the term is definitely not indigenous, it does not take away from the skill, sincerity and honor of these great men, nor does it mean that they are "egotistical", or "vain". There are several Grandmasters of the Filipino martial arts that have promoted the arts out of a sincere love for the art and the land of it's birth, and remained humble despite their status and international fame. Grandmaster Remy Presas, Grandmaster Vicente Sanchez, Grandmaster Bobbie Taboada, Grandmaster Leo Giron and Grandmaster Florendo Visitacion are just a few that come to mind. If you disagree with what I have said, you are entitled to your opinion. However I am positive that you are among a minute minority that would dare to question the integrity of these great men and other manongs who choose to use the title of "Grandmaster" which you are so vehemently opposed to. In my opinion nobody has the right to criticize the "Grandmasters" of the FMA who have sacrificed so much to preserve our cultural heritage and spread the art of Arnis throughout the world. -Rich Acosta ----- Original Message ----- Next Grandmaster...there is no such thing here in the Philippines....it sounds like the title comes from a cheap kung-fu movie, but if you insist on calling a person by Grandmaster or master he'll eventually leave you alone and let you call himself that, but in reality I doubt if he thinks of himself in that way or else he's a vain, egotistical person that one cannot possibly learn the Chivalry of the Way of the Warrior. -- ___________________________________________________________ Sign-up for Ads Free at Mail.com http://promo.mail.com/adsfreejump.htm --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima http://eskrima-fma.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/eskrima Copyright 1994-2005: Ray Terry, MartialArtsResource.com, Sudlud.com Standard disclaimers apply.
