To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net It's still up to the individual to interpret to themselves what a title truly means in their heart. How they feel and believe strongly in accordance. I know that no one will disagree with me when I would rather place more importance on the skill level being the embodiment of the title itself. Bless you all Daniel Arola Rohnee Gumpal wrote: Salutations to all who read this, I'd like to thank you once again for so much feedback on my little statement about Pinoy titles. Forgive me if I am not as worldly or intelligent as those who have replied in the negative, I am writing only my narrow opinion of what little I was blessed to learn here in my country, The Philippines. Never the less I would like to clarify what I wrote...it was about the title of Datu... From my country there is no one claiming the title Datu, except indigenous, native muslims born from royal bloodline, descended from those of the original Masters of these islands..i.e. Datu Puti, Datu Makapiya...etc...( I wonder what they would think of people claiming "Datuship") Also Grandmaster...this title is not used here in The Philippines...the art as we know it, referred to as Arnis de Mano is hundreds of years old...even older perhaps. Much blood has been spilt by these techniques for generations. The elders I have spoken to or have learned about from my poor education here in The Philippines, have been practicing the Art, since time forgotten. I have never heard of such a thing until recently, nor have the elders here who have been teaching it to me...but who am I to argue for I am just a native from a little island, with a poor education, new to the endless galaxy of cyberspace, of vast knowledge...forgive me for I am just a savage with opinions ignorant to other peoples way of thinking and customs. See http://hokkien.uuft.org/marppiokansas2.pdf for information and registration or contact Andrew Evans at 785-213-1576. Last year we had 35 people. This year's event promises to be even better as we plan on having more out-of-state MARPPIO instructors attending who will be sharing their specialties. Cost of Seminar: The cost is $130 for all 3 days if you preregister with a $30 deposit by June 25. After that, it’s $150. The cost is $99 for any 2 days if you preregister with a $30 deposit by June 25. After that, it’s $120. The cost is $65 for one day if you preregister with a $30 deposit by June 25. After that, it’s $80. Travel: I love road trips, especially in the Midwest where highways are not as congested as in other areas of the country. However, someone coming all the way from one of the coasts should fly into Kansas City International. Its airport code is MCI and is only 60-70 miles from here. I can try to arrange ground transportation for those flying in. Lodging: The Midwest Travel Buddy, see http://mwtravelbuddy.com/kansas.htm , has specials as low as $35 for 1-2 people in 1 bed and $45 for 2-4 people in 2 beds. The American Travel Services Guide, see http://atsicoupons.com/States/KS/KS.htm , and U.S. Travel Guide Coupons, see http://www.roomsaver.com/coupon_search.php?state=KS , also has great deals. _______________________________________________ Join Excite! - http://www.excite.com The most personalized portal on the Web! --__--__-- Message: 9 From: "Wieneke, Myron" To: "'eskrima@martialartsresource.net'" Subject: RE: [Eskrima] Thanks for all the feedback....Pinoy Titles.. Date: Thu, 16 Jun 2005 10:36:36 -0400 Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net >From what I remember of my Philippine history classes, a Datu is actually an indigenous lord or chieftain of a barangay but is also the name given to the ruling class, with the four classes being datu, maharlika, timawa and alipin (namamahay and sagiguilid). It may be the case now that native muslims use the term and have their rules governing its use but in the old days, pre-spanish times, it was used by the ruling class of all religions which pre-spanish time meant a mix of animal worship, nature worship, ancestor worship, etc. Back to the present, change and adaptation is a critical component of how people think and act and as such also impacts what people have created. As FMA becomes more structured and organized, it just makes sense to put ranking and names to these organizations. Some/most of the words used tend to be Filipino words adapted to a new meaning and also to a sense of "Pinoy-ness or pagka-pinoy" by using traditional Filipino words. Again as I mentioned the terms are not used in the traditional sense. But more importantly the insistence that the titles or terms isn't used in the Philippines based on ones experience alone isn't valid. Just go to the first page of the IMAFP (International Modern Arnis Federeation of the Philippines), and you immediately see the word Grandmaster which links to this http://www.imafp.com/grandmasterremy.html . I was lucky enough to train with Master Bambit Dulay last week (his first seminar/visit to the US) and he showed us the IMAFP "membership passport" with the detailed codes of conduct, org rules, promotion requirements, ranking, etc. In the ranking category it actually explicitly mentions several titles associated with their belt ranking, including dalubhasa, datu, and raha/rajah titles for very high level lakans. So at least for one of the major Philippine based (but international as well) arnis organizations that is recognized by the Philippine government for several decades, these terms, like Datu and Grandmaster, are used. After all part of the definition of a living language is the creation of new words and also the adaptation of existing words to new meanings, why would the filipino language be any different?
