I went there one afternoon and didn't realize it was instructor practice time. One of the instructors entertained me anyway and led me into the pro-shop but the owner asked me to leave because it was class time for his staff. Nevertheless, the equipment was good anyway. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net My apologies if I'm beating a dead horse here, don't know how long this topic's been going on. But, my opinion is that titles don't really mean much. I'm an honorary Tagasanay (Trainer) in Modern Arnis (IMAFP) but my knowledge of the techniques aren't quite up to brown belt level. It's only because I train others in the parts of the Art which I know and I propagate the Art in as many ways as I can through participation in demos, seminars and the like. I believe it to be foolish for one to claim oneself as a Master or Grandmaster, these titles are bestowed upon those people by others. Efren 'Bata' Reyes didn't call himself 'The Magician', other pool players were so in awe of his intimate familiarity with the sport of pool that his feats in his game made him seem like a magician. I doubt anybody will dispute the fact that Mr. Illustrisimo, Mr. Mena, the Presas brothers and other amazing Filipino martial artists are masters of their respective methods of Filipino Martial Arts. That is what makes them masters, when others on the path to achieving the secrets of the Art see something to be learned and gained from the teachings, they will be hailed as Guros, for what is a Guro but a Teacher? Simple yet a very honorable profession and title. Hopefully, if I someday get to their level, I wouldn't have to claim that I am a Master or a Grandmaster. Others will come up to me, and as a sign of respect of my skills and knowledge, they will address me as Master blah blah blah... If ever, hehe. I mean, how embarassing would it be to be haughty and claim to be a Master of a certain style then get beaten down by a well trained novice? I'll be happy with the title that I rightfully achieve in terms of belt color or level. I'll stay humble, train hard and maybe gain acknowledgement from others for my training. And even if I achieve a level which others call Master, I doubt I'd ever refer to myself with that title. I'm happy with the fact that people who know nothing of the Art come to me for an introduction. It is an honor in itself to teach them. I'm sure that my Instructors are happy with the fact that I come back to them for continued training. And for those people from whom I truly learn the lessons of the Art as well as lessons in life, I will show my respect for them by addressing them as Master or Guro, for they are Masters in my eyes though others may not agree.
