My instructor, Ron Balicki, told me that Edgar alway stressed that you should train with intention and attitude. I take that as meaning that you should train as if your life depends on it rather than with a mushy, noodle-like energy. This was evident in my training with Ron. Whenever we did counter-for-counter free flow stick sparring, he always came at me with the intent of hitting me. Not with malice mind you, just a very real intention. Similarly, one of my bullwhip instructors, Anthony Delongis, used to tell me to be "target specific" in my training. When learning the whip, it's common to think that making the whip crack is enough. Thats cool for driving cattle, but not for hitting a target with precision...so by always hitting a target (either real or imagined) you learn to focus the whip. This is also an example of "Intention". All of us have gone counter for counter with other players and in some instances you just know that if you applied any real pressure, their blocks would be worthless. Training with intention helps to remedy this HUGE problem. If you're talking about starting from a left lead, kicking with say...a right thai style round kick and planting into a right lead... that is absolutely a valid technique for closing the distance and crowding center line. Maintaining a one sided lead is pretty tough in a real fight...unless of course there are rules in the fight. If I've missed the point...nevermind. Best, Steve Kohn' Torrance, CA Steve Ames wrote: > I hate the way these cats are practicing: Its clearly beginner practice to get acquainted with basic movement concept. Nothing here is moving at an aggresive enough pace to be considered demonstration of anything realistic. That said... > http://website.lineone.net/~paul_genge/Kick%20defence.WMV Why do all of the "defense against kick" stuff require people to kick like that? When you punch even if you put your whole body behind it people still expect your going to pull your fist back to your body. But when you kick they think your going to push through and step down? Craziness. Stepping down may be a possibility if you miss but what if you make contact? Stepping on your oponent isn't going to be stable footing. Kick defense should be practiced against realistic kicks. People don't kick that way unless they've been [mis]trained to. > http://website.lineone.net/~paul_genge/Pistol%20defence.WMV Heh. Get some airsoft and take it up a notch. Let the guy with the gun not stand there like an idiot and see how much of this still works. *sigh* This is why I say its gotta just be beginner stuff to get a feel for the arts movement. Because you'd never show people this stuff and say "you could do this on the street". -steve _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list, 2200 members Eskrima@martialartsresource.net Copyright 1994-2005: Ray Terry and Martial Arts Resource Standard disclaimers apply http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima --------------------------------- Yahoo! Just wanted to drop a note to all on the list that Guro Mark Balluff (one of the original Dog Brothers and you may have seen his show " Martial arts and Beyond") is still teaching and now has a website www.powerpointmartialarts.com Guro Balluff is a very inspirational teacher to me and I wanted to try give him a place on the web that is his own. The site is still in progress so dont expect anything too cool just yet! If anyone is interested in training under Guro Balluff then theres a place to go now to with contact information, soon to be added is his bio and more (free) videos to check out and other cool stuff..A forum will be up soon also, and a shout box, please feel free to drop by and say hi! =) Hopefully this will also lead me to other people on this list in my area that want to train together ,doesn't matter to me if your training under Mark, I am just interested in meeting and training with more people in my area. Also on that note, if I can find enough people in the SanFernando Valley who are interested in Sayoc Kali, I have been in contact with Travis Downing who told me that if we can find enough people who are interested in starting a training group, we can get one started. So ,. if your in the SFV and want to train or interested in starting a Sayoc training group closer to home (otherwise have to drive out to long beach and meet with Travis and his (group) let me know, Woo! There is no real need to include a quoted quote of a quote, or all the trailers that go along with it (e.g. see below). It is a bit less of a problem for those subscribed so that they receive individual emails, but can be a real pain for those (the majority) that receive the digestified emails, i.e. digest issues. Thanks for understanding. Your post on feedback on pinoy titles,, are Words and Wisdom of a University Professor and Archeologist that best says it all about this Zombie horse on Pinoy titles postings that keeps on coming back. FMA brothers let's leave the current trend, set-up and semblance of order regarding this part of FMA or any other art for that matter, as it is what is today!!! Lot's of fruitless never-ending discords here I must say. Let's move on with whatever FMA we do and yes,,,anyone is entitled to practically do their thing about "Titles" for as long as there is no universal MA governing unit or "Force" that set the rules for issuing out titles and what not. I see brain work, business and astute thinking to come out with names for each new titles that comes out of the wood-work. So, let it go with the flow agree or not. Last,,aahh now these men Andres Bonifacio, Lapu-Lapu, and Dr. Jose Rizal - eskrimadors extraordinaire - they got better Title "NATIONAL HEROES" as they are known in history. OK,, any rebuttals?? .
