Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net An acquaintance of mine is possibly moving to Malesia in the near future and approach me with the question about Martial Arts in Malesia, in Kuala Lumpuri. He's especially interested in traditional silat styles (as opposed to sports silat) and possibly Kalarippayt (if it's possible to train it there). Does anyone have any useful information about these or some other interesting MA (I guess FMA as well) near or in Kuala Lumpuri? - Marko --__--__-- Message: 2 From: To: Subject: Re: [Eskrima] Help request Date: Mon, 20 Jun 2005 9:12:31 -0400 Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net > Check out Nat Defenser at defenser.com he is a good instructor in athat area. Academy of Martial Arts Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net North Shore Academy and Degerberg's are also up there. I think NSA is in Waukegan, if memory serves. Degerberg's is in Chicago proper. Also, I'm about 6 hours from Chicago - not something you'd want to do frequently, I'm sure, but if you ever make it down to the Louisville area, I'd be very interested in finally meeting you in person :-) Mike -----Original Message----- From: Defensive Tactics Institute [mailto:silat_1@yahoo.com] Sent: Saturday, June 18, 2005 7:45 AM To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Help request Well, I finally escaped from Gilligan's island (Guam) and now find myself in need of guidance in finding a training partner or a school in the North Chicago, Waukegan and Great Lakes region of Illinois. So, I am going to utilize my survivor skills and send up a S.O.S. request for anyone who knows of a school within this region.. I am going stir crazy with watching the local martial artists try and swing their sticks with any authority.. I am asking this as I am getting cob webs on my rattan and the Illinois plant and wild life agency is eyeing the webs with a defiant look as if they are going to confiscate the rattan if the webs aren't knocked up post haste. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi Marko, There are Petiki Tirsia and Amok group in Kuala Lumpur, you get their contact from AMOK! website. As for the traditional silat styles, most of them are sort of "underground" with small group of student. You will need an introducer to enroll, some only accept Muslims. However, most of the older sport silat gurus have traditional silat background, only problem is to get them to accept you as their "inner" student and to teach you some of the "secret" stuff. Alternatively you can contact the Silat associations in KL or your local Malaysian embassy, these people are very helpful. Now your problem will be to decide which silat to learn? There are about a thousand styles of Silat in Malaysia. By the way, don't forget about Kuntaos. You can get good recomendations from local Chinese wushu associations or martial art supplies stores. As for the Indian martial arts, AFAIK, there is no Kalaripayit school in Malaysia but Silanbam is quite popular among the Indians but I do not have any contact. You can probably try the local Indian temples to get some leads. Regards, S. H. Given the frequency in which water is present in some form during encounters across the country, a substantial number of officers face the possibility of being forced to control or defend against a combative subject in a "water environment," which can present considerable tactical challenges. Many, however, may never consider that fact from a tactical perspective. Fox Valley Tactical Training Division Trainer Dave Young, a nationally recognized expert in waterborne tactics, is polling PoliceOne members to explore the degree to which water survival training and officer screening for water defense readiness is offered nationwide.
