I've never considered it practical for real-world usage, it's (duh) usually illegal to carry. Some places will prosecute same as gun. I'd rather have a couple of sticks or a single short stick, e.g., Dan Bong (Bone Breaker). __________________________________________________________________ Switch to Netscape Internet Service. I have a sword teacher who uses them for just that. With a stick or shinai you can make abrupt changes of direction that you really can't do with live steel (the lighter weight of a shinai lets you do things that the heavier steel won't do, momentum wise). You simply can't make abrupt changes of direction with nunchaku - you have to learn to follow the momentum. Doesn't make them a great weapon, but a useful taching tool. Twice each year there is a big seminar down in Jackson, MS with a dozen or so senior instructors teaching... all with from 30 years to 50+ years of martial arts experience! Teaching in a conference style approach where three sessions are being taught at the same time, each session taught twice over the weekend, so that those attending the weekend seminar can pick what topics they wish to attend. Rare indeed, but great to experience as either a student or as an instructor. That is, if I work with them as a substitute for single stick, I find they increase my flow and continuity tremendously. Unlike a stick, they don't put up with erratic or uncoordinated swinging - you'll more likely get dinged than complete the arc of the strike. Practicing any of my usual single stick techniques with nunchaku require me to smooth out my strikes, eliminate abrupt movements, and move with more coordination - initially its just to avoid being hit. But eventually it helps me to more efficiently transfer energy without waste, and connect my body mechanics with my arm/weapon. Then, going back to the stick, my movements are more fluid and my body is more involved. Of course, you can't practice nunchaku in the park - so I have since started working with poi (weights on a rope) which are fun, legal and safe but just as effective for developing fluidity of motion. My two cents.... >Message: 2 >Date: Fri, 24 Jun 2005 14:36:11 -0700 (PDT) >From: Brian Hamilton >To: escrima digest >Subject: [Eskrima] Nunchuks >Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net > >Whenever I hear of nunchucks I've two thoughts: >1) Guys with mullets and a Kung-Fu Classic movie's >worth of training. >2) "Rapid Fire" w/ Brandon Lee.
