By suitable, I mean ideal in length, balance, weight, blade style, etc. for use in FMA oriented techniques. I've long held the old Roman Gladius would be hard to beat. Thoughts? - Anthony ____________________________________________________ Sell on Yahoo! Auctions – no fees. Povadora July 8, 2005 The Doce Pares International World Headquarters, known for the Filipino Martial Arts eskrima, kali, arnis, has included in its program the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ). Doce Pares Grandmaster Dionisio Canete welcomed the addition of a new martial arts practiced in his 3-storey building inside the Sto. Nino Village in Banilad. "It is my pleasure to welcome another martial form and sport inside the Doce Pares family," said GM Canete. Filipino-American Justin Doctolora from Pheonix, Arizona, USA will head the BJJ training staff. Aside from eskrima, karatedo, taekwondo and kickboxing, Doce Pares International gym is also offering daily weight training and aerobics. In a press briefing at the Doce Pares International World Headquarters, Doctolera said that his 7-year training under Wellington "Megaton" Dias has equipped him enough knowledge about BJJ. Doctolera's mentor Dias trained under the famous Royler Gracie, who popularized BJJ as Gracie Jiu Jitsu. "I'm here in Cebu to stay for a long time instead of Manila since I believe I'd be doing great in bringing my sport where it's not that popular yet," said the purple belt holder Doctolera. He said that the 3-day per week training will cost P1,300 per student. Training schedules are 7-9 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday while every Saturday workout starts at 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A 5-day training is also offered for P1,600. "The class will be open to everyone who wants to get in good shape either by weight reduction or gaining. They will also learn the grappling techniques, submission and defense. What they will be learning will be the sports-oriented type of jiu jitsu," added Doctolera, a business major graduate at Arizona State University. Interested parties may visit the Doce Pares any time of the day or call 346-0433. --__--__-- Message: 3 From: "John Johnson" To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: RE: [Eskrima] Non-Filipino Swords That Are Suitable for FMA Date: Thu, 07 Jul 2005 22:21:13 -0400 Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net I'm not sure off hand which other type of sword would be ideal for the FMA, but I do know that the gladius is primarily a thrusting weapon which would IMHO leave a lot to be desired to take full advantage of the fma styles, it is not a very good slashing, hacking, cutting weapon. Though I don't doubt that as fmaist's we could put it to good use but I believe that there are better choices than a gladius, just look at all the diversity in fillipino weapons as they stand now. You raised some views and I pointed out what I thought and disagreed with. You know full well where we train and you are more than welcome to come down ANYTIME to either discuss this one way or another. But as we all know you are only dedicated to sitting on a computer and typing rather than showing any dedication to training. You have shown once again why those who train with Guro and including Guro himself do not want you around or training with our group. Come down Peter and be as brave as you are now. Leave this digest free of BS. Regards David PS. I would like to apologise to Ray and the forum members for this. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam?
