Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Kimi, I am no expert, just a simple practioner. If you just want sticks to spar with only you could buy a simple pair from walmart or wherever. I have two pair, the rattan I use for drills like single six and sinawali and light sparring with my guru. In an aggressive sparring session my guru rarely goes half speed, he uses full strikes to keep my defense up and to teach me not to take things lightly. When we spar heavy I use the ones I bought from walmart so I won't get my rattan ones broken. I don't know about you, but in San Antonio, Texas it is hard to find a good pair of sticks. The places I do go are either closed or the type I want are sold out. As far as carvings I get the ones with carvings, I feel that I have better grip when I do redondo and reverse redondo. I have been looking for heavier sticks like kamagong and bahi, and all the ones I've seen don't have carvings. Really it is just a preferance of the user. The burned rattan carved sticks look a bit more intimidating and dare I say it, cooler, but if you just want to spar generic brands should do the trick. Later you could buy another set for solo practice or exhibitioning. Just my opinion. TJ People, I'm purchasing my first set of Kali sticks. I will only be sparring with them. I need to decide whether it is preferable to buy sticks which have a carved design on the "handle" area or not. A known drawback to carvings on sticks is that they may cause callouses. Can anyone share some thoughts with me about this matter which may help me understand the pros and cons better? The are thin, but very strong and are still in good shape(no tape) after many years. I use them as my sparring sticks. Kelvin Williams ------------------------------------------------------------------------ However, I do have one 'Labsica' (sp?) rattan stick that I got from Lion Heart (is he still open?) many years ago. That stick is light and very hard and has out lasted all my other rattan sticks. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net For the past several weeks I have been trying to log onto the Kombatan Arnis website at www.kombatan.com to order additional videotapes. However, the website is no longer available. It appears that the domain name is once again available for purchase. Does anybody know what happened? Is there another official website for Kombtan Arnis? Thanks for your time. Callusses are the bodies way of armouring an area stressed by friction due to use. I think I can generally tell a serious stickfighter by the callus tha runs down the left side of the index finger on the right hand. I know of my guy's have been training on their own anyways!" I wonder if the original poster actually meant blisters rather than calluses. Calluses are a good thing and prevent blisters. Blisters are a pain as they may interrupt training and prevent you from doing your job (assuming you got one where it matters :-). When I used thin smooth sticks ther were times I had to use gloves (golf gloves are the best). Now I train with sticks which are short, thick and rough on the surface, just like myself.
