Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net I'm visiting London briefly in October and I have one day off, during which time I'd be interested to visit any shops or other places of interest to someone into FMA, like museums carrying Filipino articles. I'm staying in central London (near Hyde Park) and don't have a car or anything, so they would have to be quite close (I'm familiar with the tube system). I'm especially interested in Filipino edged weapons, so if anyone knows a shop carrying them, the information would be most welcome. - Marko --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Tue, 2 Aug 2005 08:49:41 -0700 From: "A. First;hard wood sticks can give you swelling in the joints of your hands because they don't give on impact. Rattan gives more on impact and absorb's some of the shock imparted to your wrists and hands. Also I have seen many full contact fights where rattan Escrima sticks were used against hardwood staffs and also hardwood Escrima sticks, and the hardwood broke. Usually hardwood is considered a combat stick because of its heavy weight and density witch is better for breaking bones. As for carvings; if you are worried about grip you can always rap the hand area with athletic tape. A good source for rattan sticks is[www.bloodsport.com]. They have them many lengths and diameters from 3/4" to 1 and 1/4 inches.
