Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net So it is okay to use metal for workouts. Sorry being an annoying novice, my father studied various arts and was a six degree dan in Bu Do Kan Karate when he was stationed at Clark AFB. I have been in a mind set of katas and using one way of practicing. Also, I've seen too many kung fu movies that say one style is the best. Being an inside the box thinker I should change and be more open minded. One of my friends is a Wing Chun trainer and really likes the Bruce Lee philosophy and so does my teacher. If there are any other "unconventional" ways of training I would appreciate it. I used one of the handles of a carjack and it just didn't feel right. One question, how does one use a bo staff in trying to do the 64 strikes? My guru said you could use anything, but I keep running into a problem when trying to do some drills. One other question, has silat been used in FMA for a long time? I've been reading "Filipino Martial Culture" by Mark V. Wiley and I see that kuntao is Chinese and Silat is Malaysian and Indonesian. I really like to study filipino arts and especially empty hands styles. Wasn't there an article in a magazine that tried to prepare people for Ultimate Fighting in the ocotogan? If so what magazine was it? rebar works great. it is cheap/free and is about the right size and weight. ____________________________________________________ Start your day with Yahoo! - make it your home page http://www.yahoo.com/r/hs --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Tue, 9 Aug 2005 05:30:54 -0700 (PDT) From: jay de leon To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Final Reminder for Tipunan sa Disneyland Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net FINAL REMINDER FOR TIPUNAN SA DISNEYLAND This is the final reminder for Tipunan, Aug. 12-14, 2005 Fri - Sun at the Anaheim Hilton in front of Disneyland in Anaheim, CA. http://goa.home.solnet.ch/Tipunan.html http://www.worldblackbelt.com Addtional instructor : Kathy Long - 5 time kickboxing champion, actress, producer, lecturer, writer. Try using steel baseball bats or bowling pins for practice to build power arms and stamina. These items are head heavy and has temendous wind resistance. I got a junior steel baseball bat and I tell you,,,it worked my arm. A caution,,,choose and pick the right weight for your needs and do not overdo on first try as it can give you "tennis elbow". Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net I'd really like to recommend this camp to anyone with serious aspirations to blade combat. It's the first event of its kind in N.America after a long series of training camps and conferences held in the Philippines over the last decade. Obviously, it's MUCH more accessible being on a weekend and not on another continent. You cannot go wrong. Take advantage of this opportunity if you can. DISCLAIMER: I'm biased of course - GT Gaje was just in Vancouver - in fact, I just dropped him off at the aiport after a weekend of stick, blade and empty hand. And since I first trained with him in 1998 in the Philippines, GT never fails to amaze me - that is a man who is completely uncompromising of the practicalities of blade combat. And both an analytical and applied genius of bladed weaponry. It was a great honour for me to host the grandmaster of Pekiti-Tirsia kali here in Western Canada for the first time. 'nuff said. >Date: Mon, 8 Aug 2005 16:53:50 -0700 (PDT) >From: Tim Waid >Subject: [Eskrima] Pekiti-Tirsia training camp > > >Join the generations of world class martial artists >that have been trained by Grand Tuhon Leo T.
