Consider sports specific training and functional fitness training using closed kinetic chain exercises (The whole body is used but one end is isolated by a fixed base, i.e. the ground), the only way you will groove stronger, faster and subtle motions is to train in the manner which will develop the desired results. Using different weapons of varying weights and shapes will allow an fma student to adapt quicker to impromptu weapons as well as awkward or tip heavy blades. Incidentally blades are designed for a specific reason as with any tool, allow your tactile awareness to adapt your technique and see were it takes you.
