Fascinating paper Ray, thanks for the link. Morality plays the big chunk of what goes on in one's thoughts. As most in the US are brought up that killing is a sin in itself, even in defence of one's self, it is hard on the those that have to kill for survival. I remember reading an article about the Pacific theater in WWII. Most fighters(Filipino and American) had a great hatered for the Japanese for what the Japanese were doing with a sneak attack on Pearl harbor, and the raping Filipino, Chinese women, and the horror of forced death marches to pow camps. Those vets exposed to that enviroment, killed, mostlywithout remorse, came home and did not look back after killing his fellow human beings, because what the Japanese were doing was inhuman- so the vet thought of them as such and the need to destroy such evil was greater than the morality of the action to kill. Then in Vietnam, the issue turned into a politcal nightmare and the letters from home and the news on tv to those drafted made the mortality of the war greater that the cause of stopping communism and the vets coming home now are sufferning from the mind games they endured from home and in the field.... And today, of course, we see the news media largely turn this war on terror as one we should blame our own President for, cutting short of calling the soldiers baby killers up till now-but give it time.... It seems morality and protection of the counrty now cannot justify killing our enemy to the public that cannot grasp the fact we did not start it, just as Pearl Harbor. Even if the cause is survival of the country, the public that protests will not( or seem not to) care of this fact, so the stress syndrome will return in earnest and with the added ambulance chasing lawyers(lets sue everyone types) helping make this a plethora of class actions, and vet hospital mental cases. I cannot stress enough that morality plays the biggest part, but the word from home fuels and compounds the disorder. So, help save a vet! Send them the good news from home. Leave the media lies where they deserve to be. Our vets are counting on you.
