Academy of Martial Arts Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net I agree completely. Videos make good reference material and are a great supplement to training notes. But trying to learn from video is not a very efficient use of your time. I have a few hundred MA videos in my collection. Videos are very good for one thing, giving you new and fresh ideas into how others execute and teach an art in which you are already proficient. In other words, learning from videos is NOT for beginners. Not sure where you fit in... beginner, intermediate, master. But if you are a beginner, i.e. less than two or three years of regular and frequent training, then I'd recommend just sticking close to your instructor. There is plenty of time for exploring the video/DVD scene. For me grappling is something that is a quick, efficient, devastating movement or technique that does not wind up in going to the ground or a protracted set-and-hold (submission). A protracted set-and-hold (submission) technique is wrestling whether it is standing or goes to the ground. So using the above as a guide; No, the old school blade based FMA does not include wrestling. Rather it is how do traditional blade oriented FMA styles approach grappling. I know how my own training approaches it, but I am interested in hearing how other traditional FMA groups (traditional/old school FMA vs more modern hybrid styles) view grappling and bladed weaponry vs sticks. There is obviously a grappling context to some extent in many FMAs, from just stand up clinching to some more complex ground work. How did the old timers approach this question? I know some styles view grappling with blades as not being an optimal situation, are there styles that favor grappling with a blade? If so why? So just to clarify once more, this is more a historical oriented question vs a technique driven question. Meaning, I am looking at traditions of view, vs trying to find new techniques. Dawg was a biker whom I occasionally hung out with on Hollywood Blvd back in the early 80's. (Alas, the Nest is gone from Las Palmas and Hollywood Blvd. Biker Corner has moved away). Red Dog wasn't that tall, but he was built like a barrel and was an experienced barroom brawler...not a shrinking violet when it came to mixing it up. Anyway one day ol' Canine Rojo comes walking up with his arm in a sling. I asked him what happened and he told me a story of an altercation. There he was -- minding his own business -- with a guy in a head lock with his left arm. Dawg was innocently beating this guy's face with his right (that's called self-justification folks), when the guy reached into his pocket, pulled a knife, reached up and stabbed him in the back of his left shoulder, above the shoulder blade. Dawg's arm went dead and dropped. The guy wiggled away and Dawg bravely turned and hastened away before he got stabbed again. Off he toodled to the hospital where he was patched up and put into the sling...which lemme tell you is an accessory that doesn't go with most ensembles. That was from just one knife wound. Do you really want to try to try and grapple with someone with a knife? I know a lot of people claim to be able to do it, but before you cough up cold hard cash for this kind of hyperbole you just remember ol' Red Dawg.
