I'd recommend a longer whip (6-8 feet) in the beginning as it travels slow enough for you to keep track of it visually. If combative applications are the goal, you should eventually progress to a shorter whip (4.5 feet or less) after you've developed a solid technical foundation. The shorter whip recovers much faster than a longer whip and this will help to facilitate rapid fire cracks. Peter Jack, Terry Jacka, David Morgan and Joe Strain are some of the best whip makers out there. All are easily found on the net. I would avoid leather bullwhips and go with kangaroo hyde instead...much more durable. There are some very nice nylon whips available as well, but you have to fight them a little more and it could make your touch harder than it needs to be. If your technique is good, cracking the whip requires virtually no effort. Good luck and always be sure to wear eye protection when training. Tapes DO allow one to see their art with new glasses, but a solid base of instruction makes those glasses focus better.   That said, a little plug for my teacher.   Punong Guro Mat Marinas has 6 tapes on the art of Pananandata-Marinas. They cover single stick, unarmored freefighting, double stick, balisong, hawakan, and self defense with common items. The instruction is straightforward and really informative. The tapes / dvd’s can be bought from ESPYTV.COM   If anyone would prefer personalized, autographed copy of any of PG Marinas tapes, dvd’s or books contact me and I’ll get it for you directly.   On training near Alexandria, Va.: PG Marinas lives less than an hour from Alexandria, and Po told me he is willing to teach on a limited basis. If anyone is interested, please contact me and I will put you in touch with him.   Rob Mulligan KWIKSTIK.COM                               --__--__-- Message: 6 From: "James McGowan" To: Date: Fri, 26 Aug 2005 11:05:46 -0400 Subject: [Eskrima] 9th WEKAF WOrld Championships, July 2-9, 2006 Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net 9th WEKAF WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS (World Escrima, Kali, Arnis Federation) July 2nd - 9th, 2006 Orlando, Florida USA Walt Disney World Swan & Dolphin Resort We look forward to hosting the 9th World Championships in Orlando, Florida, USA in 2006. Sounds like it's a good idea to learn to use your knife in all situations, including clinches, holds, and other various grappling positions. --__--__-- Message: 8 From: <1@msfencing.org> To: Subject: RE: [Eskrima] Video Date: Fri, 26 Aug 2005 10:46:52 -0500 Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net I have all of the Inayan Eskrima DVDs and highly recommend them. Because that is how any number of ludicrous ideas about fantasy solutions for fantasy problems develop in the MA/SD/RBSD/knife fighting worlds (Peyton Quinn's version is "Ingenious solutions to non-existent problems"). These are often taught as gospel when it comes to so-called "self-defense" scenarios and often feed fantasies about how violence works. Or are you actually asking for information about the problems/factors inherent in the idea of trying to grapple with a blade? Because if you like I can point some out. These problems are based in how violence works and the effects of a blade on both your flesh and your ability to function. That too would qualify as "a little familiarity with the subject" that you are suggesting is not a bad idea. These considerations however, tend to reveal holes in many of the modern, cockamamie E-A-B-T-I-B-T-N-T-I-A-T-C-R-S-L-U-T-E-T-P-A-B-T solutions people teach out there. So I'm asking because if you have some sacred cows about what you are learning regarding knife work that you don't want BBQed, it would be better for me not to provide the latter information. On the other hand, it also can be used to understand why "traditional FMA" tend to be rather thin on the ground when it comes to teaching people to trying to grapple someone with a knife. (whaddya know, them ol' guys knew a thing or two about real violence. Funny ol' world isn't it?)
