The resulting violence would be -- from you perspective -- an unprovoked assault. But from his point of vew, you started it by insulting him. Those working as doormen will probably have come across fellow doormen who had this attitude. Several times i found myself walking an irate customer away apologising and that was only the times when the fighting never took place. > Oh just for the record technically speaking very few attacks are "surprise attacks." While the person getting attacked may be surprised that's usually because 1) he/she wasn't paying attention to the situation and 2) he/she didn't recognize the signficance of the actions leading up to the attack. > If you are looking around at key points, it is very easy to see most > robbers/stranger rapists/carjackers coming. Certain behaviors when seen in certain contexts only mean one thing. Seeing them and knowing what they mean go miles for keeping attacks from even happening, much less being surprise. > i agree, except though Marc, the attack never comes wen you are fully alert. Its probably when you are tired, full of the flu etc. Would you disagree? > People who use violence to get what they want often have this behavior on speed dial...but that doesn't mean it was a surprise attack. It was there, you just didn't see it, understand it or your participation in its creation. Agisn, i recognise this person and i still dont think many martial artists would cope with the majority of these charachters. I know i dont want to be there if i can help it. > I don't go to bars and > > other places where folks tend to get into fights. > > Good for you. By avoiding places where violent people tend to go, you do greatly reduce your chances of being involved in violence. > i have a problem with going to busy bars. Anyone else the same? I cant relax. I also read Randy Williams' article that Perry is referring to. One thing though.... Ever thought about how *registering as a lethal weapon* or *registering your hands as a lethal weapon* actually creates a lot of hassle for you, assuming that such a thing was for real? I mean look at it this way - why should you be registered as a lethal weapon? So the cops can keep you under surveillance. If a crime happens in your neighborhood, particularly one that involves violence and quite possibly death, who are the cops likely to look at first? You, the lethal weapon. You, the guy with the hands as lethal weapons. By the way, that I think is the underlying assumption behind the requirement to register with the police if you were teaching martial arts, at least in HK (I'm referring to the articles I mentioned earlier). If you were traveling by air, you would have to register the fact that you are a weapon or that weapons are a part of your anatomy. How much hassle and added expense would it be? Would you be allowed to travel by air at all? We can go on here... While the myth is certainly entertaining and has its comic moments, I'm just spinning a few bytes here about why I think it's more hassle than people think its worth....Me I'd rather be harmless :-) Bot Philippines also :-) --- Perry Gil Mallari wrote: > Though the myth of registering the hand as a lethal > weapon was an enduring urban legend, there are > indeed places that have a systematic system of > registration and monitoring for martial arts > practitioners. Salamat," Haven't seen the movie but it is based on the book "Ghost Soldiers" by Hampton Sides which came out in 2001.
