To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hi Ray: I do not recall Kuya Nes ever mentioning any association with a ninjitsu group. I will ask him the next time I see or correspond with him. When I was training in Modern Arnis in the Philippines, the guros there used the terms "lakan" and "dan" interchangeably. For example, in Modern Arnis, the correct rank in Tagalog would be "Lakan Antas Anim" or "Lakan Anim" and the proper English translation would be "Blackbelt, 6th degree." But conversationally in Tagalog, if the other guy gives you a blank stare when you say "Lakan Anim," you would say "6th dan" and most of the time, the other guy would now understand what you are talking about. The Tagalog word for a blackbelt, meaning the person and not the belt, is "blackbelter." Jay de Leon Ray wrote:> Traditional FMA doesn't have a hierarchial structure, much more a dankyu > system. We see that a few FMA groups have adopted this system, but they usually refrain from using the Japanese terms dan and kyu. Doce Pares was probably the first to use the black belt system within the FMAs. Jay, do you know.?. Did Nez get the idea of using a 16 Dan system from one of the Ninjitsu groups? That is the only other art that I have heard of using a 16th Dan. As someone formerly in higher education/student affairs I think the main concern is that a power dynamic might be abused or taken advantage of, particularly if the perception of one person is skewed by age, experience or some vulnerability. That may inadvertently give someone like a counselor, teacher (K-12) or doctor a power that comes from their role. I guess kind of in the way that Batman as a symbol or icon becomes more effective than just Bruce Wayne with gadgets haha. At many institutions professors are even "permitted" to date students as long as they are not currently their professors at the time, something that in my opinion is still risky. In law school however I believe there is more of a collegial atmosphere and so while there is theoretically still the same issues, I would imagine they are much more tempered. As long as you use your best judgement I think you should be fine. Now if only I had professors that asked me if I could offer them "private lessons"... Anyone care to provide a review of one or the other, or a comparison of the two? Ray, here are links to 2 reviews of STAB from around the web. If I sat down to describe the program, this is mostly what it would look like--only it wouldn't be as well written: defend.net/deluxeforums/showthread.php?t-7014 modernselfdefense.com/article.php?story=20041104183005792 As for Red Zone, I have yet to personally see the material myself. But for what it's worth, I have heard nothing but good things about it from training partners I respect. Both of whom have also worked with the STAB concepts. --__--__-- Message: 4 From: Afern27@aol.com Date: Tue, 20 Sep 2005 11:43:08 EDT To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Re: STAB vs. Red Zone Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Seems I copied the link to the first STAB review incorrectly. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Just fyi... The list may be slow for a few days as I deal with some family issues. My mother passed away this morning, so I head back home to take care of her one last time. That's a bit of a gray area but as long as you keep your private instruction on a professional level, no personal stuff involved, then it would be ok. What you (and she) would have to avoid is of course giving the impression that you're giving her private instruction for a grade. How you're going to do that.....
