To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Some martial artists who had adopted the 15th degree: Prof. William K.S. Chow (kempo) USA GM Hatsumi (Bujinkan) Japan Trovador Ramos (Trovador Ramos Asian Consolidated Martial Arts - TRACMA) Philippines These men are the founders of their own styles which warrants their use of the rank. Meanwhile in FMA circles, more sspecifically in the Negros Islands in the Visayas where I live, the highest degree is 10th degree/dan which is more popularly uised in Presas style modern arnis. The brothers Grandmasters Remegio, Ernesto, and Roberto A. Presas of Hinigaran all hold this rank. GM Remy Presas, who was also a judoka and a karateka, adopted the dankyu system from the Japanese martial arts. I agree with you Ray that FMA practitioners who adopted the dankyu system refrain from calling it such. I just use the term because it is more universally known. Anyway, in our province, as I believe in most parts of the Philippines (I've been to about 35 cities and municipalities in the country), titles are more commomnly used. jay de leon wrote: Hi Ray: I do not recall Kuya Nes ever mentioning any association with a ninjitsu group. I will ask him the next time I see or correspond with him. When I was training in Modern Arnis in the Philippines, the guros there used the terms "lakan" and "dan" interchangeably. For example, in Modern Arnis, the correct rank in Tagalog would be "Lakan Antas Anim" or "Lakan Anim" and the proper English translation would be "Blackbelt, 6th degree." But conversationally in Tagalog, if the other guy gives you a blank stare when you say "Lakan Anim," you would say "6th dan" and most of the time, the other guy would now understand what you are talking about. The Tagalog word for a blackbelt, meaning the person and not the belt, is "blackbelter." Jay de Leon Ray wrote:> Traditional FMA doesn't have a hierarchial structure, much more a dankyu > system. However, because of its convenience in identifying practitioners > and its other related benefits, alot of FMA teachers have adopted the > dankyu system. We see that a few FMA groups have adopted this system, but they usually refrain from using the Japanese terms dan and kyu. Doce Pares was probably the first to use the black belt system within the FMAs. Jay, do you know.?. Did Nez get the idea of using a 16 Dan system from one of the Ninjitsu groups? That is the only other art that I have heard of using a 16th Dan. In this issue: MESSAGE FROM GRANDMASTER DIONISIO CAŅETE WEKAF USA/TOURNAMENT WEB SITE WEKAF USA TOURNAMENT INFORMATION WEKAF DUES INFORMATION FAMILY & FRIENDS Message from GM Caņete The 9th World Eskrima Kali Arnis Championship has been set for July 2-9, 2006 at the Walt Disney World Dolphin Resort in Orlando, Florida, USA. On June 1-3, together with US WEKAF Director Tom Sipin, Mrs. Sue Sipin, Mrs. P.J. Yauger and Mr. Dennis Yauger, I made a trip to Orlando, Florida to finalize the details as regards schedules, hotel accommodations, venues and other amenities. We also had a lengthy meeting with the Program Director of the ESPN Club, who expressed great interest in covering the event for their audience. Weeks before our scheduled meeting, ESPN asked for DVD's on some of our past championships and the Discovery Channel's Documentary on the Filipino Martial art which was filmed at the WEKAF and Doce Pares Headquarters in Cebu City, Philippines, in November 2003. The competition venue will be the Pacific Hall, which has an area equivalent to 6 full size basketball courts. And can easily accommodate at least 18 rings/courts if needed. This is located at the ground-floor level of the Dolphin Resort. Based on our experiences with past events, and considering all factors this much I can say, there is no better place to stage the 9th Championship Edition than in the Dolphin Resort, which is situated and is an integral part of the sprawling Disney World Complex. Walt Disney World does not only afford an opportunity to our players and family members to visit the world's number one entertainment center but holding the event there will certainly give an immense prestige and great honor to WEKAF. So let's join hands to make this great event at a great place a monumental success. See you then during this great moment of WEKAF's history. D.A. Caņete Chairman Emeritus Website Information Information for the 9th World Championships can be found at the WEKAF USA website (www.wekafusa.com). We invite all countries to send us information on upcoming tournaments, links to their sites, or any other information that is of general interest to potential competitors and fans. Just to clarify - Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin is the official name of the resort. However, you will want to make your reservations at the Walt Disney World Dolphin wing, which is where the venue is being held. When booking on line, the reservations will automatically reserve your room in this resort. If you are having trouble booking through the personalized electronic reservation request system, it is suggested that you may need to disable your firewall, make your reservation, and then re-enable your firewall. If you would prefer to make these reservations by phone or change a reservation, please call 800-227-1500 or 407-934-4000, mention group code "WEKAF". An important note: These special rates will be offered three days prior and three days after the tournament dates, subject to availability at the time of the reservation. Our Event Planner is still working on discounted travel arrangements. However, because of concerns about the condition of the travel industry right now, we are being cautious about booking flights too far in advance. We want to be sure that arrangements we make will remain valid when it is time to travel. Please be patient with us; we expect to make announcements soon. USA Regional & National Tournaments All the USA Regional tournament information is posted to the WEKAF USA website, and all flyers can be downloaded. - Southeast Regional Championships, September 25th - Midwest Regional Championships, October 8th - Southwest Regional Championships, October 22nd - East Coast Regional Championships, November 5th - West Coast Regional Championships, November 5th - Rocky Mountain Regional Championships, November 12th A special note to all competitors regarding age and weight brackets: (May also be viewed at http://www.wekafusa.com/2005Season.html) Age - This applies to any competitor whose birthday will fall between the date of the Regional tournament in their area, and the date of the World Championships: Any competitor who intends to qualify for the National Team and compete in the World Tournament must compete in the division that they will enter in the World Championships. In other words, if a competitor will enter a new age bracket by the date of the World Championships, they must register for the older age bracket in both the Regional and National Championships. For example, if you qualify 1st or 2nd at the Regional at age 17, and you turn 18 before the Nationals, or the World Championship, you will not have a spot on the US Team unless you compete and place in the 18 year old division at the Regional and the Nationals. Weight - This requirement also applies to weight classes. Any fighter close to the upper limit of their weight class, who feels that they may pass that upper limit by the time of the World Championships, may opt to enter the next weight class up, in both the Regionals and Nationals. This will prevent a situation where they earn a spot in one division only to lose it by later having to compete in a heavier weight class. Once a competitor qualifies for a division in either the Regional or National Championships, they may not change divisions. This requirement is maintained out of fairness to the other competitors, and is meant to prevent qualified competitors from being bumped from the Team by changes in age or weight class by other competitors. It is also done to insure that there are not lopsided groupings of competitors in a given division. A special note to all competitors 15 & Under: (May also be viewed at http://www.wekafusa.com/events/nationals.html It has also been decided that competitors in age divisions 15 years and under can go directly to the 2006 WEKAF Nationals without first having to qualify at the Regionals. This means that competitors in those divisions who can't make it to their Regional or do compete and fail to place 1st or 2nd in their division, will have a second chance to make the US National Team and qualify to compete in the World Championships in July of 2006. By doing this, WEKAF hopes to accomplish two primary objectives: 1) To make it affordable for parents to have their children and teens compete for a National Championship. 2) To create greater incentive and/or chances for kids and teens to participate in the National and World competitions. Those who do compete and qualify 1st and 2nd place in the Regionals will be seeded at the Nationals and have a priority status for a "Bye" in the first round of eliminations. USA National tournament information has been updated to include the costs and deadlines for pre-registration. The agenda for the event will be posted within the week. Reminder: The pre-registration deadline is November 22nd. It would be advantageous to submit your information immediately following your regionals. You can also make your hotel reservations for this February 2006 event now by visiting: http://www.wekafusa.com/events/nationals.html 9th World WEKAF Championships Shortly, posters for this event will be available to Country Directors and USA Regional Directors upon request. To help promote this event, we suggest hanging these up in your schools, displaying them at your seminars and tournaments. Update on ESPN and Sports Illustrated - Sports Illustrated is interested in doing an article and will contact us closer to the event. The ESPN Club on the Boardwalk is very interested in filming parts of the event, as well as interviewing fighters and doing some demos on the Boardwalk. Our Event Planner has been in contact with their corporate headquarters and there is interest. But, as of yet, no commitments have been made. Part of this depends on the interest and participation at our regional and national championships, as well as the level of international representation. Dues Reminder Shortly we are starting our Tournament Season. We would greatly appreciate it if you could make sure your 2005 WEKAF membership is taken care of. Family and Friends As I'm sure you have heard from your stickfighting friends, dues-paying WEKAF members (2005 & 2006) will be eligible to book rooms at a rate of $129 per night plus applicable tax, a guaranteed 2006 rate. Family members, friends, and spectators are welcome to join WEKAF for the fun at this tournament. If non-competitors wish to take advantage of the reduced room rate, they may join WEKAF at the annual rate of $20, and will be asked to volunteer at the tournament, helping in such capacities as timekeepers, scorekeepers, equipment managers, or other roles. PASS THE WORD. THIS IS A ONCE IN A LIFETIME OPPORTUNITY FOR FAMILIES AND FRIENDS. Visit www.wekafusa.com for more specific information and http://www.wekafusa.com/membership.html for an application.
