Like Rob, I've used just about everything out there, and I agree that for general banging around, if you must use hardwood, hickory is the best choice. I've used cocobolo, kamagong, bahi, zebrawood, and others, and have found most hardwoods too be just too brittle. Hickory is a dense, hard wood that also is more flexible than the others, and is less likely to break during practice, although I have broken hickory as well. When all is said and done, rattan is the stick we go to for overall general use. It is just a safer choice, but does pack enough of a wallop that the student still respects the impact of rattan. I've easily broken cocobolo and kamagong, but not bahi. This was one reason why Angel gave bahi sticks to his most senior students, they lasted a long long time. Good battle sticks. Just a quick note to say I will begin teaching Grandmaster Ernesto Presas' Filipino martial art of Kombatan at Club One, 4460 Hacienda Drive, Pleasanton CA 94588, I will be sharing their very nice "dojo" with a member of that world-famous Brazilian Jiu-jitsu clan, the Gracies. Crosley Gracie, an international level competitor in MMA already teaches BJJ over there on Monday & Wednesday nights. Beginning November 1, I will be teaching FMA, Tuesday & Thursday nights. For particulars, you can contact me directly (Email: Alex.France@kp.org, Tel: (925) 924-4498). IPMAF's official website is down and will be for some time. For Kombatan news & information, I suggest you visit some of the individual IPMAF chapters' websites. Master Shelley Millspaugh, IPMAF Chief Instructor for the Midwest, also maintains a Kombatan forum on his website. Just do an internet search on "Kombatan" and you'll find his as well as several others' sites in Europe, Canada, and the U.S. For those of you interested in BJJ, Crosley's website is www.crosleygracie.com. Give it a try --should be fun and worthwhile! For those of you interested in Balintawak, Grandmaster Ver Villasin is teaching in Vallejo, CA.. You can email him directly: vervillasin@sbcglobal.net Master Lito Concepcion also teaches Kombatan in Vallejo, You can email him indirectly via caroline_concepcion@hotmail.com For those of you interested in Modern Arnis, Dr. Remy Presas Jr is teaching in San Pablo, CA. You can email him directly: drremypresas@modernarnis.com In case you're wondering why I'm advertising other teachers local to me, while at the same time just starting up my own school, it's because I believe there's enough students for everyone. And if you were to ask me what martial art one should study, I would say, "Study them all."
