Guys that shank people in prison don't generally have any FMA training and they seem to carry out their "jobs" with no problem at all. I'm guessing that if you took one of these natural killers and tried to teach them tactical blade, it would probably hinder them until they got it down. I've seen plenty of streetfighters that can kick the average "high level" guys butt. Some people just know what to do instinctively. I think this whole thread is basically much ado about nothing. -Steve Kohn Arndt Mallepree wrote: In fact, we, as the instructors have to watch closely whom we teach and whom not. But gentlemen - man as the living creature used weaponary a long time! And from my job as a cop I can tell you, that it is not necesarry to teach someone knifetechniques in order to lead him to kill someother person with a knife! Of course he gets more efficient, but with a houseknife anybody can kill. Bad thinking people are everywhere - so why are you all so astonished that they are in our martial arts schools? Maybe the nice pupils of ours only need a drink to much in combination with a real bad day - to get onto a Rambo Mission? my 2 cents malle ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ken Borowiec" To: Sent: Wednesday, October 19, 2005 2:55 PM Subject: RE: [Eskrima] Re: Secret techniques > "i know the flying instructor who had one of those hijackers in his > class and > he still doesn't sleep very well. I have ran across many instructors (one in particular comes to mind) that are highly knowledgeable and very skilled, but have a pretty warped view of the world, and frankly scare me. This one person I mention is an extremely talented martial artist, but is also a pathological liar. So many times I've heard him tell me an out-an-out lie, knowing full well that he knows I know the truth, but is so used to lying that he finds it near impossible to tell the truth. I have also ran into innumerable people who are at a high level of skill, but are people who are so unbalanced that they are potentially dangerous, and the threat of danger to the general population is compounded by their skill and their inability to act as a reasonable person would in most situations. To clarify a seemingly vague point, I once dismissed a student who after a couple of years, was a very skilled fighter. I had, for some time, had reservations about him, but chose to play it down. One day he announced to me that he felt it was time that he got into a couple of streetfights in order to test himself. I realized how serious he was when I discovered him carrying a knife with a 14" blade in his car. I asked him why in the world he was packing such a weapon, and he replied, "In case I get into a fight." Needless to say, I immediately dismissed him as a student. Unfortunately, though, he soon found another Eskrima teacher, and eventually made it to instructor level. This is a classic example of the enormous responsibility that we as instructors have; we must be always cognizant of the potential for violence that a student can have, and act on our instincts when it comes to judging character. If something about someone doesn't bode well, we must be wary of what kind of knowledge we make available until we are certain of that person's character. It is always better to err on the side of caution. How many times have you watched the news and the neighbor of a murderer says "but he was such a nice guy"? Anyone can crack under pressure, either real or imagined. For that matter, I've met plenty of "instructors" that have issues and the occasional screw loose. Lots of little guys with big things to prove. I hate to say it, but it comes with the martial arts territory. -Steve Kohn --__--__-- Message: 3 From: "Leo Daher" To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Re: Secret techniques Date: Wed, 19 Oct 2005 23:13:05 -0400 Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Quote:  I think this whole thread is basically much ado about nothing. -Steve Kohn  Couldn't agree more.
