On behalf of the Council of Elders of the Dog Brothers, Dog Brothers Inc. Martial Arts hereby cordially invites you to its "Dog Brothers Winter Gathering of the Pack" at 11:00 AM on Sunday, November 20, 2005 at the RAW Gym in El Segundo to conclude when the fighters are done. Many of you may remember our Gatherings held in the park in Hermosa Beach, which, although they were hosted at considerable expense, were always free to you our friends, our guests. However with a private facility involved we now need to charge admission of $10. We ask that you still consider yourselves to be our friends and our guests. In this context we ask that you respect our wishes in the matter of Video. It is very simple: NO VIDEO CAMERAS, NO DUAL PURPOSE CAMERAS (i.e. with both still photo and video capabilities). THIS MATTER IS OF IMPORTANCE TO US! And, if you see someone videoing, please don't let them abuse our hospitality-please let us know. As always, you may take photographs for personal, non-commercial use PROVIDED you give us a complete set of the ones you take. Thanks to the increasing numbers of you who actually remember and bother to do this! It is very much appreciated! The Magic Words: The MAGIC WORDS: "No judges, no referees, no trophies. One rule only: Be friends at the end of the day. This means our goal is that no one spends the night in the hospital. Our goal is that everyone leaves with the IQ with which they came. No suing no one for no reason for nothing no how no way! Real Contact Stickfighting is Dangerous and only you are responsible for you. Protect yourself at all times. All copyright belongs to Dog Brothers Inc. CA law applies." This matter of accepting the risk applies to those of you in the crowd too. For example, sticks, and fights for that matter, may go flying into the crowd. Parents should consider things like this in deciding whether a child is old enough to bring along and/or deciding on from where to observe the event. For example, sitting on the heavy bags ringing the fighting area is a really risky idea for a child (or adult for that matter). If a stick or a fight comes careening your way-get out of the way! At each Gathering there is a different focus. For the knife fights, there will be some surprise rules. And for the stick (and other weapons too!) we encourage people to hide knives and bring them into play during the fight. Remember that you may fight with weapons other than a stick if you can find someone willing to go against you. Please consider stick and knife (aluminum blades OK with us) fights, staff fights, and anything else. In order to more deeply explore certain variables, fighters may agree to "no grappling" rules. In staff fights, the fighters may wear wrestling type ear guards under the fencing masks. There is no charge for fighters but FIGHTERS MUST PRE-REGISTER, even if they have fought before. The Fighter's Registration form can be found on the website. If you are a member of the Dog Brothers tribe an email or phone call will suffice. For all Fighter Registration matters, please contact Cindy at Prettykitty@dogbrothers.com 310-540-6853. You are not pre-registered until your name appears on the list of registered fighters on the website!!! If you have fought before and show up without having pre-registered there will be a $20 fee. We REALLY, REALLY, REALLY don't like having to deal with this on such a busy day so please do both you and us a favor and pre-register. If you haven't fought before and you show up without having pre-registered, you will not be allowed to fight. This will be ruthlessly enforced! FWIW Many self confessed football hooligans are otherwise intelligent, largely decent people. I sit next to one at work. He is very softly spoken, well-educated, witty, and loves his cat. He considers what he gets involved in to be between, 'consenting adults' as it were. He maintains (to me at least) that it is very rare that innocent football-lovers get attacked and serious injury is mercifully rare, given the wild swinging that it tends to involve and lack of weapons in the UK. Bearing in mind that rival teams' 'top boys' speak on the telephone to arrange to meet up for fisticuffs, he likens it to me going to the gym to beat seven shades of sh1t out of each other for excitement. He actually thinks I am really scary, which would make most of you lot laugh if you knew me. I am just offering a little background. I want to make it clear that I don't agree with him. I stopped going to the football when I was about 12 as you had to 'get involved' with the big boys once you got to a certain age. I try to avoid violence, and have so far been successful at this. The REAL skinhead movement in the UK started in Coventry and London in the 70s when fans of ska music and West Indian culture in general had a look involving a DM boots and a shaved head or 'suedehead'. Basically they were all smoking reefers and hanging out with a load of Jamaicans, all listening to reggae and ska music together, and having a great time. I don't see the problem here ;) The skinhead look was then hijacked and adopted by a load of neo nazi idiots. REAL skinheads still resent this hugely, as they are anti racist. No disrespect as I am just playing devil's advocate, but I think 'stupid' cannot be necessarily applied to all of the above. It was not a racist or nazi associated group. In the mid to late 70s in the UK the press stereotyped the skinheads as racists and this of course gave it the unfair label which does attract those with racist intent to adopt the image. Films such as American X have exploited the stereotype and perpetuated the myth. Of course the nazi elements are there but its not as black and white as that. I had some very good friends who were seriously into the whole lifestyle. they were not violent, loved the clothes, the music. I accept that there may be cultural diversities that see the skinhead as something else in other countries but on a trip to LA the other year i got talking to a 'skinhead' in a record shop about what music he was listening to and discussed the ska influences that i was aware of. He was certainly no neo nazi and i imagine he too was perplexed with the ignorance of people who allow the stereotyping to prejudge him. A bit like the FMAers who feel wronged when the press sensationalise a rogue student who knives a bouncer and misrepresent the art and general motivations for training in them. In the meantime, in recent notes i quickly wrote that the term for what i know as the 'shield' is known as Kalasang or Kalasak or Tamming. Can anyone advise me on the correct spelling or origin. thanks. On 10/21/05, Ken Borowiec I don't know about hooligans but there is an actual group of neo-Nazis that named themselves "Skinheads" at least they exist in NJ. But I'm sure there other places as well. But in a Part of jersey there is a group that call themselves "skinheads Chapter XXX" its even on their jackets. I have met them and had direct interaction with them. Not to good ends since it was my friends party they crashed because they did not approve of blacks in their town. They ended up leaving disappointed with the results. I have a crop. I'm talking about the hooligans that fight, vandalize and spew racial epithets. There's a theme here, and I appologize for addressing it in this context. I'll get back to FMAs. -Steve Kohn iPat wrote: i guess you ve been one? ; ) but really, working to stereotypes is base level stuff. It's the word we use instead of 'gamelan', which is Indonesian/Malaysian. 3) Kuomintang--of course you know what this is. The kuLintang and kuMintang are 2 different things. One is a musical instrument from Mindanao and Sulu, and the other is a Tagalog war song that evolved into the Kundiman.
