In some cases you might want to project "I > am a very big dog." Excellent point. I also like the "seem large" point. I had a dog once, a truly wonderful dog. He was a pitbull mix, smart, loving, loyal... a good friend. He was only 95 lbs, but everyone assumed he was 120 - he was a big dog who carried himself like a Very Big dog. When I trained dogs (Rotties, Dobies, Pits, and other "aggressive" dogs), that was also my attitude - I'm a much bigger dog than you, and you don't want to piss me off." If you can do this congruently, with dogs (or people) you tend not to get much trouble. Come to think of it, that's when I was living in Venice, CA (Animal's old stomping grounds) and I didn't get f**k'd with much by people there, either. Regarding "I don't want to fight" - in an actual confrontation (early phase), this can be a useful tactic, lining up your hands for a strong pre-emptive strike while setting your antagonist off his guard (for better info, do a web lookup on "the fence", or amything by Geoff Thompson). A variant is to start the "interview" phase of the encounter this way, trying to defuse the situation and allowing your antagonist to gain face while walking away ("Ah, I coulda kicked his ass"). If the situation does not defuse, you then have the option to strike pre-emptively, or to "switch on" in midstream, going instantly from "prey" to "serious predator", a shift which is pretty disconcerting to your opponent. Anyone else ever use this in competition, e.g., start out seeming mild, unsure, unskilled, thereby setting your opponent into a "ah, easy win" mindset, then switching on at the "start" signal and completely overwhelming them?
