However if you want to make the sport more realistic then where are the stairs, the aircraft seats, the rain or snow, the slippery floor....? Guro Inosanto relates to how certain parts of the blend he teaches or has been exposed to have developed from a wierd connoction of rules. One comptition maybe didnt allow punching but you could elbow! So we see that the arts used sport application to develop certain aspects of the art. nowadays we see a tendancy to deny its authenticity unless it functions within the cage or ring. Its like saying that jogging is useless unless you are able to compete in an athletics tournament or my doggy paddle may not save my life in water if i cant do a butterfly stroke sprint! of course boxing in the ring is going to hit the nail on the head but its relating to a specific area and to mistake that area as having the same answer for everything else is missing the point and more importantly the fun! -- iPat "Intellect and intelligence do not go together. By its scientific nature the structure and density of human bones are generally similar and stronger than muscle. Whereas the muscle content and strength of humans varies fromindividual to individual." With respect to the video clip of Sifu Lam it is interesting to note the efficient use of footwork to transport his structure along various lines to attack respective weaknesses in his partner's skeletal allignment. Hence his demonstration is in effect a "drill" between Sifu Lam and his training partner. While no one denies that drills and fighting are the same animal, or that effectiveness in performing drills necessarily translates to effectiveness in fighting, few would deny that drills have value when properly concieved and executed in an appropriate context. One could argue that their are two kinds of fighters: (1) those who are natural fighters who will never need any kind of martial arts to improve their chances of survival, and (2) the rest of us for whom drills remain a necessary but not sufficient condition to achieve the same end. When viewing a demonstration therefore one should look for what could happen - not what will happen - and try to retain the appreciation of that distinction in his or her own training.
