Ortiz Inquirer News Service Editor's Note: Published on Page A23 of the November 11, 2005 issue of the Philippine Daily Inquirer THE MANILA POLICE DISTRICT (MPD) Headquarters no longer has room for overweight policemen. MPD director Chief Supt. Pedro Bulaong yesterday launched a special fitness program especially designed for "Manila's Finest." "Transforming our Manila policemen through physical fitness will create a new breed of cops with increased strength and vigor, which is the key to effective crime suppression and prevention," Bulaong said in a statement. Former Swedish Marine Lt. Roger Lindevall of the Philippine Council for Strength and Fitness Inc. (PCSF) will supervise the MPD's physical fitness program, according to Bulaong. Lindevall explained that the Manila policemen would be required to undergo arnis self-defense training, weight training, police obstacle course activities, physical ability tests, fighting fitness for female members of the Special Weapons and Tactics team, bodybuilding, and a 12-week "extensive tummy trimming weight reduction system." The MPD had earlier signed a memorandum of agreement with the PCSF to draft and initiate a fitness program suited for the Manila policemen. Bulaong also said that the MPD would be hosting its first championship bodybuilding competition at the Manila Police Academy on Dec. 10. The competition will be part of a fund-raising project to renovate the MPD gym and purchase new equipment and facilities. "A fit police officer will possess the necessary physical, mental and emotional stability to perform police work," Bulaong stressed. Ali Atienza, head of the Manila City government sports development program, had also pledged to help the MPD build a fitness gym inside the police headquarters. --__--__-- Message: 2 From: "Peter Gow" To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Date: Fri, 11 Nov 2005 04:11:27 +0000 Subject: [Eskrima] Natural Fighter Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Steve, I agree with most of the comments  that you made but I have some reservations concerning the point of a "Natural Fighter" unless the person is a sociopath. Most people who are studying the martial arts reprogram themselves at the neorological level to have the ability to fight. As the majority of people do not know how to fight, they might think they can fight but compared to many martial artists the person who has never taken a martial arts lesson or some form of instruction and I include being beaten up in street fights in this as this is the school of hard knocks simply does not know how to fight effectively. Even tribal youths are given lessons in hunting and fighting. The reason I say this is because the majority of society are programmed to respond in certain ways to a myriad of situations and when violence is involved most simply do not want to get involved especially if it involves them getting hurt. I will agree that some people definately have an apptitude for picking up physical movements and this may be an attribute that can turn them into excellent fighters - perhaps this is what people coin as natural? Anyway we will have to agree to disagree on this one.
