Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net In response to Peter Gow, I agree with you on that. Separate from that discussion, but on the same page: I had an experience once with a guy I worked with who was considered an "awesome" natural fighter. He had no training, and in fact no skill. He used to get into physical trouble and legal trouble, I even bailed him out of jail once so he wouldn't loose his job. Having seen the guy in action it came down to the fact he was direct and fast acting, showing initiative. The remarkable thing was that when he saw someone do something "acting like an ass" or "doing something wrong" he went into a sort of "mania mode" (triggered easier when he was drinking) and he ended up finishing the fight usually with one hit (he often broke bones on people with one hit) since he did this without regard for his personal safety, he often broke his own fingers / wrist etc. with a single punch. It was my belief that my coworker ended up with this problem after a severe motorcycle accident in which he took a year learning how to walk (don't remember about what he had for head injuries) I would estimate, in the two years we had the same shift at work, he probably was in at least 10 fights that was responsible for him being banned from every drinking establishment in the short drive. He sent most of his opponents to the hospital, including a biker gang (mass attack) where he defended a girl they were hitting on (he just jumped in a started letting the fur fly) He was charged and convicted for assault (and related charges) on two occassions and beat the rap at least once (for no apparent reason) He also showed no regard for weapons, he was always unarmed, always dropped the beer bottle before jumping in etc. and if the other person had a knife, he would beat them extra for pulling it out. Point of fact: His girlfriend at the time had a similar problem, she once tried to bite his eye out of the socket on her birthday, because at the bar, she wasn't getting enough attention, he had a vision problem and about 20 stiches. <> I asked around about this and had a few people that had pet dogs like this, where they would have a calm looking sort of maniac rage that made them dangerous for their owners and as dogs were put to sleep. Most of the other "feared" fighters in the area here are natural with little training, most of them arm "swarm" fighters, they yell and scream and make a huge emotional thing of it and swarm you with pushes and hook punches. "Captain Rage-Maaaan!!!" sort of stuff. Most of them carry a belt knife or some improvised street weapon as they are nervous about their reputations. People generally are so mild mannered here and polite, someone exhibiting anger is the same as someone elsewhere becomong violent, people here often get bullied by others who play the anger game, that is probably the root of those types of fighters becoming so emotional before throwing the first push or punch. -Lance -- No virus found in this outgoing message.
