Kente) Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hello My name is G.Kente. I'm new to the list. I have been doing martial arts formally for 18 years. I'm from South Africa. My background is in Ntonga (Nguni stickfighting and wrestling), I have also leanred Kyokushinkai Karate, Jujitsu,Kung Fu,Western Boxing Thai Boxing +Sanshou. I am currently experimenting with Kali and Silat. I'm interested in the FMA and it's application in real combat. I'm looking forward to learn a lot from this list. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net As a gun could make an incompetent idiot superoir to any martial arts system that can ever be concieved, lets all shoot this natural fighter stuff in the foot and move on back to why we are recieving this forum in our email slots. Ok with that being said, I have a good idea, some of you will undoubtly have to find some goofy way to approach my letter here with a bunch of "what if's" with the gun play... those that do are the problem mailers in the forum.. without question. Heck, some will even email a response as to this last statement finding a claw in their psychy that makes them think they are the problem mailers I am pointing out... None of us are the problem mailers. It is the subjects that find there way to the forum that is the problem... Lets not forget the reasons of this forum ya'll! I think this is a marvelous way to discuss FMA - and worldwide ideas to it. So keep it simple. I personally go about the Jeet Kune Do way of absorbing, discarding and keeping within all I practice, and try to be all I can be, I invite all to do the same. So without further adue, here is a subject that can restart us all on the right path: As to Silat and Kali, what is your take on siniwalli techniques within each- good points and bad,not which you think is better as a sysytem... but what you see within each systems technique as to double stick? I had the idea that when Musashi was not so interested in travelling learning and teaching, he learned other disciplines (such as painting) but he admired a "perfect cut" and put it into his artwork. I looked at practice cutting and wondered if my patterns of cuts were going in the right direction. Swinging the sticks for practice gets you going, but what do you do when your "blade" does what blades do, instead of slicing air? I had an epiphany (spelling?) a few years ago when practicing with a pair of nunchaku, and someone swatted them to rebound hitting my head with the free end. I was impressed and thought about this for quite a while. Then I started impact training and learned to use the nunchaku much more effectively, it was much less of a threat. New Topic: I built a model Trebuchet yesterday, what came of building it was the use of a "sling staff"that I made from a broom handle and various material. I understand by using centrifugal force you can increase the throw (much like lacrosse, only with more a mechanical advantage) does anyone know of a martial art that incorporates the use of a sling-staff (the staff aspect, the missle aspect and the sling can be used as a whip aspect)? It seems that Kendo had its own version of >"Sinawali" - at least back during the days of Musashi. FWIW, Musashi was one of the first Japanese swordsmen credited with using both blades in combat.  Later in life he renounced the use of live blades and took to carrying two bokken.  Many younger Samurai wanting to make a name for themselves challenged him and fell to his bokken.  A side note about Musashi is that he was around six feet tall and used an extremely long blade, giving him an extreme largo range.  Also  the art that Musashi studied would be kenjutsu at that time, as the -do art of the sword was developed later. I just typed Nguni stick fighting in the search window and I came up with several sights Here a a few links: http://ejmas.com/jalt/jaltart_Coetzee_0902.htm http://ejmas.com/jalt/2004jalt/jcsart_green_1104.html http://www.colorq.org/Articles/2003/martial.htm I also found this little statement that i found interesting from this site http://www.mashufaa.co.uk/history.htm: Kayti Arguably the first of all weapon-based martial arts, Kayti represents the origins of all weaponry. Though centred in Africa (primarily Kenya), the roots come from all over Africa. Kayti is the predecessor to modern swordplay (from China) and the better known Islamic Kali (from Philippines).
