It indirectly acknowledges the fact that the art is blade-based. In actual blade fighting, there is no other choice but to have a "point-fighting" mindset. > > Message: 3 > Date: Thu, 24 Nov 2005 21:26:40 -0800 > From: Ray Terry > To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net > Subject: [Eskrima] Rules used in the SEA Games > Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net > > Thus, the full-contact event uses a point system similar to that in kendo > and fencing, the SUDDEN DEATH system. These weapons are unique in that both are made from parts of the stingray. These are: 1. Whip made from the dried tail of the stingray ("buntot pagi" or "ikog pagi") 2. Knife made from the "stinger" of the stingray ("binsol pagi") The stingray whip is particularly effective in defending against the cane or stick (yes, even the double stick). The stingray knife, on the other hand, is well-known for producing wounds which do not easily heal (probably because of the venom still left on the dried stinger, as well as the infection caused by saw teeth particles left behind in the flesh of the hapless victim as the stinger is drawn back by the attacker). Obviously, these are supposed to be the staple weapons of the typical Filipino fisherman. "Buntot pagi" on the right hand and "binsol pagi" on the left hand is probably the Filipino fisherman's version of espada y daga. --__--__-- Message: 3 From: Ray Subject: Re: [Eskrima] FMA weapons from the Stingray To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Date: Fri, 25 Nov 2005 18:10:31 -0800 (PST) Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net > There are two (2) traditional FMA weapons which might be worth exploring by > hardcore FMA afficionados out there. Knife made from the "stinger" of the stingray ("binsol pagi") In we Sudlud Eskrima we use the somewhat easily found sjambok as a flexible weapon that can be used very much like the stingray tail. The shorter sjambok (~40") seems better for this purpose than the longer versions.
