One of the foreign fighters who come to Cebu lately was tai chi practitioner Neil Hirschowitz of Massachusetts, USA, who is married to a Filipina named Marissa. Hirschowitz is associated with grandmaster Owet of De Cuerdas Arnis style, known for its fast and numerous strikes some friends fondly call, "bunal sa enkanto" or enchanted strikes. After Hirschowitz met with Caburnay and saw his style, the American thought teaching the Filipino martial art to the rest of the world. He also envisions of popularizing the various Filipino arts in painting, folk dancing and even music. Meanwhile, Hirschowitz is a major sponsor of the Lapunti Championship Tournament, which will be held today at the Elizabeth Mall Activity Center. --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Thu, 29 Dec 2005 20:42:19 -0800 (PST) From: Leo Salinel To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: [Eskrima] Lawyers in the Philippines Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Yes, lawyers occupy a VERY high position in the Philippine social stratum. And for good reason. The most powerful people in the country--the power brokers who coopt those with the most financial muscle (the big businessmen) with those who have the physical muscle (those in the military and police) are always lawyers. It is an unsaid rule of thumb in Philippine society that if you want to get rich and you're not cut out for business because you're not good in math and accounting, then you should be a lawyer. You'll be surprised how many big businessmen and top corporate executives in the PI are lawyers. Unlike in the US, around 70 percent of Filipino lawyers do not practice law but instead have big businesses, are powerbrokers behind the scenes, or are in politics. As a middle class college kid, I used to disdain politicians until after law school I realized just HOW powerful they really were. One good reason could be that the Philippine bar examinations are the toughest in the world--you have to study FULLTIME for 10-12 hours 6 days a week for 6 full months just to prepare for the annual Bar exam given each September. Thus, lawyers and the general public invest so much honor in the title "Attorney at Law" knowing how much blood and sweat went into earning it. I'm also training under GM Cacoy, but not on a personal basis like you. Although, I have been thrown around by him at many seminars. I train under the Patalinghug family who have close ties to GM Cacoy, or Lolo Cacoy as we've been taught to call him. So believe me, I understand your bias. I was just trying to ask the question from a neutral standpoint. Thanks again and Happy New Years all. > > From: Ray Terry > Date: 2005/12/29 Thu PM 08:44:48 EST > To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net > Subject: Re: [Eskrima] Re: Doce Pares 1932 > > >Just for my own clarification; what's the issue between GM Diony and > >GM Cacoy?
