In it there is a picture of a group of men credited > as being part of a gun club. However, Guro pointed out that all these > guys had asparagus knives but the editor just saw the one gun. The photo taken by Manong Frank Mancao is actually at a bunk house at Manong Itring's camp out on Roberts Island just west of Stockton, in California. It was a "casino day" and many of the men in the asparagus camps had gathered there to watch a sabong and partake in some games of chance such as"beto-beto", Hi-Q and Russian poker. Some of the men depicted in the photo are part of Manong Johnny Q's group who conducted the gaming, including the fellow holding the rifle. It should be noted however that the firearm of choice for the Manongs prior to WW2 was a .32. as rifles were impratical to have due to their itenerant work schedule. After WW2 both the .25 auto and the 1911 had become vogue. Knife of choice in those days was the Geo Schrade "presto" paratrooper automatic, made in Bridgeport Connecticut. Prior to that, the Salinas Valley Melon knife was most popular. To those of us who have actually worked the aspargus fields, the tool used to harvest asaparagus is known as a "sundot" or "utob" in the Ilokano dialect. It should also be noted that the "sundot" was customized by the individual to suit his particular height, grip and style of "cut", with the custom specs done by the local camp "panday" (knifemaker). It should be noted however that the > firearm of choice for the Manongs prior to WW2 was a .32. ... This was also pretty much the case across the US. The .32 S&W Long was very popular. My grandfather passed away in the early 1940s. The gun he slept with under his pillow every night was a .32 S&W Long. Surgeons, however, prefer to use the title 'Mr' - which I always think is a bit strange! Although, on the other hand, when people call me to ask about classes I usually ask, at some point during the conversation, what their name is (for future reference). If the person on the other end refers to themselves as 'Mr' Whatever, that usually puts me off them straight away! People who have an University Doctorate (phd) - especially females - usually prefer not to use the title Doctor unless, or until, some grubby little shit asks if they are 'Mrs' or 'Miss'! It is also quite amusing how ex-military people like to hang onto their rank in civilian society. 'Brigadier' or 'General' So-and-So. Who cares? Once they leave the military they're out-ranked by the rest of us anyway! ;o) Politicians are usually regarded by the general populace as being the lowest of the low - which is the same sort of level as Attorney's, until you need one perhaps. Even then, the prices they charge usually ensures that they're still regarded as being daylight robbers of the very first order. Was she deliberately targeted or was she just a "target of opportunity"? If she was just a "target of opportunity" then some kind of generic personally-carried countermeasures may suffice (e.g. pepper spray, knives, handguns, etc.) If it appears that she was deliberately targeted then you should try to answer the next question: 2. Was the motive really robbery or is somebody trying to send you a message? If you realize that this is just not a simple case of robbery, then I think you have no other recourse but to obtain help from local law enforcers or, if you really can afford it, obtain the help of private security professionals. In general, however, nothing beats talking directly to the offended party to straingthen things out. If the incident was just a simple case of robbery, then you should try to answer the next question: 3. Are you dealing with an organized robbery gang or just the garden variety hand-to-mouth type of robbers. If you are dealing with garden variety types (e.g. those who rob just to have money for their next drug fix or meal, or just for their "kampong" homecoming fare) then generic countermeasures may suffice. If you are dealing with an organized robbery gang, then you should do further research on the ff: a. Their modus operandi (e.g. will they strike again) b. Their offensive capabilities (e.g. weapons, weapon skills, etc.) c. The size of their network Hopefully, based the answers you generate on the foregoing a clear pattern will emerge as to the most effective countermeasures you should adopt. >Message: 1 >Date: Tue, 27 Dec 2005 13:27:16 +0800 >From: "S.
