The actual certificate that the person is issued with is a degree in medicine. The title Dr. was originally used by PhD(Push Here Dummy ;-) no offence meant to any of the readers) graduates, this certificate reads "Doctorate of Philosophy in ..." The reason for the use of the Dr. title by medical practitioners is probably due to the time frame that it takes to complete the degree(6 years) which is roughly the same as the time taken to complete a degree and a PhD(minium 7 years). You will also find that double degree graduates are respected by PhDs. Hope this helps.
