Presas being called professor: 1. He used to teach judo and arnis at the University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos (UNO-R) in Bacolod City. Thus, the title professor could refer to his one time profession as a teacher in the academe. 2. In the early days in the 1900s in Negros Occidental, the only title being used for arnis teachers was professor (sorry folks, no grandmaster titles, etc.). Thus, the title also refers to his profession as an arnisa teacher. 3. Since, GM Presas was an implant in the US, he had to adopt to accepted norms in the States. During those times, the title professor was more often used than the soke, grandmaster, etc. that is so common today. Martial arts greats in the US like Wally Jay Sensei, Florendo Visitacion Sensei, and William K.S. Chow were some of those who were referred to as professors in the martial arts community. It seems logical for them to refer to their colleagues and peers with the same title of respect. Just my 2 cents. It is honourary, although as already mentioned, is snubbed by the reverse snobbery of surgeons on the subject. The time studying of around 7 years is about right too. In England a veterinarian doesn't get the title of doctor, although they have to study longer and have to treat a wider variety of ailments. Unlucky if it's the title you're after. There are a number of notable titles in the martial arts world. Does anyone know how Wally Jay became prof. Wally Jay? How about prof. Presas? (An easier one) >From Merriam-Webster: professor Function: noun 1 : one that professes, avows, or declares 2 a: a faculty member of the highest academic rank at an institution of higher education, b: a teacher at a university, college, or sometimes secondary school, c: one that teaches or professes special knowledge of an art, sport, or occupation requiring skill So just as some think the term master only means "the employer especially of a servant" instead of one of the other dozen or so meanings that are more applicable, a professor is more than just a college based instructor. Bit of trivia, usage of the martial arts title grandmaster was started back in the 1970s by Hapkido's Dr. He-Young Kimm (founder of Hanmudo) for his former instructor. An act he now regrets given the title inflation we now commonly see. It was told to me that Professor Wally Jay achieved the rank of professor when he published his book “Small Circle Jujitsu” and served as a technical advisor to many (national and international) jujitsu organizations. My Grandmaster once shared with me his view of life as a martial artist. He said to me, “That in life, we all take or follow a path. All paths have a beginning, midpoint, and (metaphorically)end. In the beginning, we learn as students, at midpoint we give back by teaching, coaching or training others, and in the end, we are rewarded with honor and respect from those who benefited from our teaching.” I would add that titles and ranks quickly identity’s where one is on his/her path, and more important, what he/she has accomplished and given back to those he/she has taken from. I respectfully bow to all those who have come to the end of their path. Manuel KemscrimaDoh Ray wrote: > There are a number of notable titles in the martial arts world.
