Fun aside, but it is interesting the legends of martial arts say some learn from the fighting techniques of animals, now the animals are learning from us. If you look to the right side of the page you will see under the photos that BJ Penn is a BJJ black belt. BJJ is a variation of a sub-set of Kodokan Judo. A more honest titling might have been BJJ black belt BJ Penn enters a judo competition and beats black belts. It may be considered polite to don the white belt if your taking lessons in another art (depends on school etiquette) but to claim to not be a black belt in a competition is kinda crummy. In this case the guys in charge of the competition clearly knew BJ Penn was a blackbelt or they wouldn't have been matching him with blackbelts. Others are more sly about it and I just don't get it. Even if your competing in a different art you've still had years of combat training that the whitebelts in that art may not have had... its still bad form. If I claim to be a lower belt and then beat actual lower belts what have I gained? Worse, what if I lose? Heh. I was in a competition once as a red belt. I was asked to spar two yellow belts and protested. I was told these were "special yellow belts". Beating them didn't feel at all good because obviously they were far less skilled and even ranked that way. Bad ref, bad. --__--__-- Message: 4 From: Ray Subject: Re: [Eskrima] white belt beats black belt (Ray) To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Date: Wed, 11 Jan 2006 13:29:28 -0800 (PST) Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net > Cheap shot Ray. You'd have to take that up with Google. However, more importantly than his rank is that he was the full contact world champ. Therein lies the real cheap shot, not the color of the belt he wore. As the video says, he had a white belt in BJJ at the time, not a black belt, which he got almost three years later from Andre Pederneiras. Again, that tournament happened in 1997, when he was still a BJJ white belt.
