If BJ Penn was a Judo white belt, that is the color of belt he should have worn in the competition. His rank in another style (regardless how similar) is incidental. When judo black belts visit my school's BJJ class they are given blue belts to wear. This is the belt color acknowledged as the one to wear by someone who has earned a black belt in judo if they have not earned rank in BJJ. There is no reciprocal rank acknowledged in judo for BJJ. When the black belt teaching at my school trains at the local judo dojo he wears the judo rank he earned as a kid in Brazil (green belt). All this might seem "unfair" or preposterous to the casual observer, but that is the way that is followed in that tradition. This way practitioners of other traditions do not get parachuted into systems with rank they cannot back up. But that never happens, does it? BTW, years ago (in the 60's) a prominent judo black belt (Hayward Nishioka) entered a shotokan tournament in California and also beat all the black belts there. Nothing new under the sun. Hayward Nishioka is the judoka credited with showing Bruce Lee judo. --__--__-- Message: 2 Date: Thu, 12 Jan 2006 08:10:15 -0600 From: "Van Harn, Steve" To: Subject: [Eskrima] Capoeira vs Muay Thai Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net There's a clip available from Jony Jaa's new film http://www.tomyumgoongmovie.com/ The fight between Tony and Lateef Crowder. http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-8514518157668120764&q=muay+thai Steve http://arnismaster.org/ http://www.zulfakr.com/ --__--__-- Message: 3 From: "John Johnson" To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Subject: RE: [Eskrima] monkey karate Date: Thu, 12 Jan 2006 10:15:26 -0500 Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Hahahaha That looks like my old Sensie's brother and his monkey. Perhaps a Grandmaster Monkey to bring Karate to monkey's around the world? Fun aside, but it is interesting the legends of martial arts say some learn from the fighting techniques of animals, now the animals are learning from us. Full Circle." Well spotted Lance, I like that. Another 'full circle' example I've heard relates to black belts. I told a non-MA friend of mine about the story (true or false) about the Shaolin temple. As beginners they were given a white belt, and years later when they had learnt all the animal forms, they had been through so much that it got covered in sweat, dirt, blood and whatever else and ended up more or less black. My friend then came back and said that he had a work colleague who is fairly high level kung fu. He told his colleague this who agreed with the story but said that if you're fighting in competition and the other guy's belt looks white it's a worry. It probably means he has been a black belt so long that it has been washed and bleached over time. On a slightly different tack, I just can't help myself... I can't open the 'monkey' film on my computer at work, however if memory serves, I have seen it. I have a biology degree and the film I remember featured a chimpanzee. Generally speaking, primates (order primata) consists of apes and monkeys and a few rarer animals. Of monkeys and apes, generally only monkeys have tails. Hominids includes gorillas, orang utans, chimpanzees, and, for the non-creatonists among us (PLEASE let's not start that!!) includes humans as well. For biologists, it's not quite confusing a dolphin with a fish, but it is like confusing a dog with a cat. However - if the film does indeed contain a monkey, I have now managed to look like a complete nerd and a complete idiot all at the same time. Why would it be a surprise that he did well in a Judo tournament? An experienced wrestler with some submission coaching SHOULD do well. In any contact sport, the skills from similar sports are carried over. A good college wrestler should fight in the black belt division in Judo, assuming that he is familar with the rules. To have an experienced grappler fight in the while belt diviision is to ask to have a lot of injured white belts. --__--__-- Message: 10 Subject: RE: [Eskrima] white belt beats black belt (Ray) Date: Thu, 12 Jan 2006 13:50:19 -0500 From: "Ken Borowiec" To: Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net This just proves to me that on many levels belts don't mean much compared to what one knows. There is nothing more to say than that. Isn't 3 years pretty much unheard of to get a black belt in BJJ? Not unusual in judo, though, which only goes to show that belt colors are apples and oranges. If you watch the matches you'll see that he plays very intelligently -- avoiding the throw attempts, countering, shooting, anything to get the game onto the ground where he obviously (having done BJJ) feels most comfortable. What was really surprising to me was that he actually managed to throw his opponent in the last match (kind of a counter-throw). Although, if these were shown chronologically, you might reasonably assume that his opponents by this time were rattled and more than half beat before their matches started. =wl -- ...this is an awesome sight.
