Same applies for rattan, but since the are no hollow compartments, you just have to drill all the way through. A pin sized hole should suffice. - Oscar > > From: "Lance Cross" > Date: 2006/02/12 Sun PM 12:58:50 EST > To: > Subject: [Eskrima] Screaming Sticks > > A general question: > > Does anyone know of a stick attachment that creates a whistling (or other) > noise when the sticks are twirled? Rama Sun.Star Cebu THE three days of almost non-stop drizzle in the city made the usual weekend trip to the firing range uneventful. Kamagong Gun Club, based inside the AFP Central Command headquarters in Lahug, was supposed to play host to yesterday's leg of the interclub shooting circuit but Col. Ceferino Layao, the president, called the match off because of the weather. It's a shame, really, when you consider how the range crew had prepared for the match two days earlier, despite a downpour then. Kamagong's Roy delos Santos made a really intense four-stage course of fire for the would-be competition. But, then again, you can't hold a shooting match when there's mud everywhere. First, it may be unsafe. Second, the participating shooters will take your name in vain as they start losing precious brass. So what do bored gun club weekend warriors — in this case Atty. Vicente Fernandez II (the head of the Philippine Amateur Judo Association in Central Visayas when he's not busy in court or out shooting his 1911) and myself — do when it's too wet for shooting? We go to the mall and allow ourselves to be thrown down (with sufficient force, mind you) into a smooth and flat tatami mat. MASTERS AT THE MALL. Three grand masters were in Cebu last week to hold a three-day martial arts conference, sponsored by the Cacoy Doce Pares School and the Cebu City Government, at the JY Square Mall. O-Sensei Phil Porter of the US Judo Association and the US Martial Arts Association in California, Sifu Richard Bustillo of the IMB Academy, also based in California, and GM Ciriaco "Manoy Cacoy" Cañete of the Cacoy Doce Pares School facilitated the workshop. Manoy Cacoy, who was close to my late father, and Atty. Fernandez invited me to the event. Over 40 people, a large number of whom were from the PNP, attended the event that was capped by the awarding of an Eskrido 1st Dan Black Belt to Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña. The grand masters — Porter in Judo, Bustillo in stand-up striking and Manoy Cacoy in Eskrido — took turns in doing demonstrations that became stimulus activities for a workshop. Among the lessons during the workshop was an interesting Judo technique called the Ude Garami, an arm lock that can be applied from nine different positions. It often uses considerable twisting action that puts pressure on the shoulder and the elbow joint until the opponent taps out in submission. What's interesting about the technique, I learned from Atty. Fernandez, is that (read on Paul Taneo fans) this lock was used by Masahiko Kimura to defeat Helio Gracie, founder of Gracie Jiujitsu, in a 1951 match in Brazil. The Ude Garami, after that match, also became known as the Kimura hold. POLYMER MATCH. And now back to shooting. Next week's practical shooting match will be hosted by the NS Shooting Range in Mandaue City. We can only pray that the weather becomes more cooperative. But for Glock, HS2000, Armscor APP and MAPP and Heckler & Koch pistol owners, however, the action will be at Kamagong as the club holds its 1st Polymer Pistol Match. The competition was sketched out last year yet and formally announced during the club's annual assembly last December. It is, according to Layao, the first of a series of "concept events" designed to bring the sport and discipline of shooting nearer to the masses. These events are not designed to rival with the circuit competitions that are held alternately by all other gun clubs each Sunday, to dispel the fears of some. The match targets new firearm owners and those other people that own firearms but do not participate in the circuit scene. Similarly, it is carried out using a different set of rules culled from the International Defensive Pistol Association, among other sources. If anything, these concept matches intend to introduce the ordinary gun owner into the world of recreational and/or competitive shooting. The polymer match will be a three-stage affair with the course of fire designed by Cebu's Tactical Shooting guru, Dr. Tyrone Jude Mercader. Participants may also take part in a separate Man vs. Man all-steel shoot off. The club website, www.kamagonggun.org, has details of the match. --__--__-- _______________________________________________ Eskrima mailing list Eskrima@martialartsresource.net http://martialartsresource.net/mailman/listinfo/eskrima http://eskrima-fma.net Old digest issues @ ftp://ftp.martialartsresource.com/pub/eskrima Copyright 1994-2006: Ray Terry, MartialArtsResource.com, Sudlud.com Standard disclaimers apply.
