I'm just not sure if the side that you would stick (no pun intended) to the stick is flat or rounded but maybe you can "dish-out"(with a large drill bit) the end of the stick if needed. Most likely that many garage sales will produce a few of these Nerf products. I have a stick with a "wormhole" that is 1/8"deep X 1/4"wide X 1 1/2" long and seems to make a sound. You could probably use that as a starting point and use cheap dowels for experimenting.
