I've been a practitioner of the FMAs for about 12 years now and have been teaching for about 8 of those years. In this time I haven't made one single instructor. The reason for this is that I've noticed that too often, people are promoted to the rank of in "instructor" based on accumulated information rather than the ability to communicate that information. The ability to communicate information is what being an instructor means to me. So...I think that an additional requirement for an instructor candidate should that one of their students should be tested on basic material to confirm that it has been taught to them correctly. If the candidate has no students, then they are only eligible for advanced student ranking. Seems simple to me. While this approach may be too long and drawn out for a commercial school, I think it is a better way to produce quality instructors in "backyard" type groups. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Martial arts expert, 21, gets life for murdering his parents NICK FOLEY Scotsman.com A BANK worker who murdered his devoted parents at their home was jailed for life yesterday. Martial arts expert Michael Clarke, 21, stabbed to death his father, Milroy, 70, and his mother, Joan, 56, in Melksham, Wiltshire, on 6 December, 2004. He then travelled to London with three friends to watch a rock concert before returning home and pretending to discover their bloodied bodies. Clarke maintained someone else had killed the couple, but there were no signs of a break-in and they had been dead for several hours. He was found guilty of two counts of murder by a jury at Bristol Crown Court last Thursday. His friend Stuart Painter had earlier been cleared of disposing of the murder weapon for Clarke after the jury failed to reach a verdict. While neighbours and friends described Clarke as a polite and loving son, the trial heard he had an unhealthy obsession with murder, death and violence, and had built up a collection of more than 100 knives and weapons, along with books and internet printouts on ritual killings and serial killers. Clarke, who was a black belt in ju-jitsu at the age of 18, also excelled in escrima, a Filipino stick-fighting art. Clarke stabbed his father, a former policeman, 17 times in the head, neck, chest and back. His mother, a child- minder, was found with 14 wounds to her body. Clarke was ordered to serve at least 28 years in prison, including the time spent on remand for the killings. --__--__-- Message: 4 From: Ray Subject: Re: [Eskrima] Instructor Testing To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Date: Mon, 27 Feb 2006 21:27:09 -0800 (PST) Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net > I'm in need of some opinions here. I agree with all you say after the above, but... Isn't 4 years or even 8 years pretty fast to go from beginning student to instructor? It is in the arts that I'm familiar with. By 'instructor' I'm assuming you mean teaching on your own, not as one of the senior students that helps with instruction at your instructor's school, aka backyard group. After 8 years of teaching I would hope that I had some people that were nearing instructor level, but none of them would be there yet.
