I'm glad you agreed with me for most of what I said. I was well aware when I wrote that I became an instructor after 4 years that I left myself wide open for comment. The one thing you are forgetting though is that its not years that count, it's the amount of hours in every year that you spend training as well as the quality of the time spent. When I was at my training peak, I was with Ron Balicki in private lessons twice a week, in Guru Dan Inosanto's class twice a week, assisted Ron in his class twice a week and travelled with Ron on his seminars...as well as just hanging out with him and training casually. This went on for 3 or so years because I didn't have a day job the entire time. Not many people get to put that kind of time in as an adult. I was very lucky. I don't think 4 years is too premature to become an instructor if you know the material and can teach it. I did. Everyone learns differently and I approach students on a case by case basis. If I a guy learns to move well and can teach other how to do it after 2 years experience, then he gets to be an instructor. I would never impose a random time limit on someone. It depends on their progress alone...whatever the time frame. Having said that, I encourage training in the art for the love of the art alone, not for a relatively worthless piece of paper that means nothing without hard earned skills to back it up. Best, Steve Ray wrote: > I'm in need of some opinions here. I agree with all you say after the above, but... Isn't 4 years or even 8 years pretty fast to go from beginning student to instructor? It is in the arts that I'm familiar with. By 'instructor' I'm assuming you mean teaching on your own, not as one of the senior students that helps with instruction at your instructor's school, aka backyard group. After 8 years of teaching I would hope that I had some people that were nearing instructor level, but none of them would be there yet. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net With the Oil Industry, Aberdeen has a workforce from all over the world. In the early 80's there were a great number of Chilean workers (before legislation stopped the use of very cheap labour) to whom the knife was part of their attire. I got to see a lot of knife fights from this group. Some settled here and i recently talked with one and we both talked about that era. Turned out we both scurried under a table at one particular occasion when a fight broke out (circa 1981)! There were many time i approached particularly Chileans differently when i ran security at pubs and clubs based on my experiences, which was often questioned by other doormen who didnt see the need. I pulled one doorman away from a slash that he didnt see coming - again from a Chilean - and closed the door on the offenders hand. When i worked in notoriously dangerous nightclub beside the docks all the doormen were particularly aware of the increased possibility of knives with the sailing fraternity enjoying their stint on shore. Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net I agree with Ray Terry. If you are teaching Kali, you are teaching knife and sword fighting. Every stick strike you teach is a sword strike. Espadda dagga is long and short blade etc.. . If you are an instructor and claim you don't teach your students to fight with blades; you are a hypocrite and a liar as well as a poor instructor.
