Part of what we're seeing here may be semantic. "Knife fighting" connotes 2 guys squaring off with knives, mano a mano, like Rip and Bernardo in West Side Story. Hey, you're drawing your blade, and giving me plenty of time to draw my blade or respond in some way. Golly. Let's both draw our blades and take our stances. Fair fight, just with sharp and pointy bits. That scenario is just plain stupid and pretty unlikely. If you find yourself in that situation, consider using your intellect for a career in politics. I think that's what some people are responding to when they talk about "not teaching knife fighting". On the other hand, getting attacked by someone with a knife is a real possibility. I very much want to know, and would want students to learn, how to deal with that possibility. Awareness is as important here as knife handling, if not more so. There are other skills as well that are critical in understanding how to shut down an attacker armed with a blade and lethal intent. An analogy: As a bowhunter, there are always arguments about how good a shot you need to be in order to hunt ethically (e.g., have a darn good chance of killing your prey cleanly). However, in bowhunting there's a lot more to bringing home game than just "how good a shot you are. It really is good, and important, to be a good shot. But you also need to be able to get within your range, to have excellent woodsmanship and stalking skills. If you're a great shot at 30 yards but make so much noise in the woods that game scatters when you're within 50 yards, you won't do very well. I have a friend who is a lousy shot past 20 yards. He's quite a decent shot inside 20 yards, and a darn good shot inside 15 yards. That won't win him many tournaments. But he's better than anyone I know at getting close to animals. Wild boar are a specialty of his. He brings home way more meat than a lot of other guys who are "better shots", because his other skills are so much better than theirs. It's not just about how good a shot you are. Similarly, it's not *just* about how well you can use a knife. That said, knife skills are important. If you can stalk well but totally can't shoot, you won't bring home any meat either. Teaching knife use is important, both in terms of really understanding what you're up against as well as how to survive either unarmed or with a weapon (and for me, surviving is paramount, staying out of jail is important but secondary to surviving, and looking cool is way, way down on the list). I really hope I never have to use a sharp implement on another human being. But if the guano hits the fan I'd rather be well trained in using one than trying to figure it out on the spot. There are other people on the list who have way more experience in "what works and what doesn't". I humbly acknowledge their expertise and enjoy learning from them. Also, I'd like to publicly acknowledge Marc M for not jumping into what would be a seemingly ideal place for a 3 page rant :-) Now THAT's restraint. Surprised somebody hasn't set up business making these and charging the tyre suppliers for disposal of the tye, thought about it myself but did not see the demand there. --__--__-- Message: 9 From: "Lance Cross" To: Date: Tue, 28 Feb 2006 15:25:57 -0500 Subject: [Eskrima] Kali Arnis Escrima and Old Crimes... Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net All, I thought by simple history and definition that Kali, Arnis, Escrima were bladed arts. They are taught using blunt instruments for modern convenience. Last time the trees were trimmed at my house in town, I had an audience. Should have put a hat down and made some money. Here in Canada we don't usually get "bad apple" students coming in, other than "armchair blackbelts" who want to be loved for their misinterpretted knowledge. Mostly the FMA brings in Fencers and other martial artists looking for a group to work with. Does anyone supplement the children's class with "poi"? -Lance --__--__-- Message: 10 Date: Tue, 28 Feb 2006 12:34:49 -0800 (PST) From: Steve Kohn Subject: Re: [Eskrima] Re: Instructor Testing To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net James, As you haven't ever trained with me, that's a pretty bold statement. My current students just don't spend too much time worrying about ranking (at least I hope they don't)...and neither do I. Best, Steve James Nordstrom wrote: "In this time I haven't made one single instructor. The reason for this is that I've noticed that too often, people are promoted to the rank of in "instructor" based on accumulated information rather than the ability to communicate that information." Seems that your method of pedagogy is lacking. Do not ask what your students need to do to learn to become good instructors ask yourself what you need to do to make them good instructors.
