I am eager to bring him here as soon as I can." Sonny I completely agree with you. Having travelled to the Philippines several times for training, it was not until 2004 when I had the opportunity to stay for an extended time was I able to truly experience the extent of Master Topher's skills and knowledge. My teacher, Master Roland Dantes has known and been friends with Master Topher for decades. In fact, Guro Roland's brother Johnny Pintoy was a karate champion of the Philippines and also trained under the auspices of Doc Lengson before and during the KAFEPHIL days. Both Guro Roland and Johnny Pintoy both hold Master Topher in very high regards. In his instruction he specifically concentrates on basics and alot of sparring which I feel was of great benefit to to me in my training under him. I consider myself fortunate to have been taught by Master Topher and consider him to be my teacher also. We are also hoping to have him visit us in Melbourne Australia hopefully as son as his schedule permits. Jay de Leon - Hello! Since you and your group have supported Master Topher's seminars you know the quality of martial atist that he is. Congratulations on your event and I will be in contact with you soon about an interview for a web site we are creating. Thanks Guys. David --------------------------------- Yahoo! To: Subject: [Eskrima] My thoughts on the WEKAF Rules Reply-To: eskrima@martialartsresource.net I have read everyone comments on the current rules for WEKAF contests. Here my perspective from my life experiences. When I was a kid, we use to stick fight (Non-padded stick) with little or no protective gear. I remember busted knuckles, welts and how it generated a lot of bad feelings between friends. We tried to scrounge up anything we could to help us as protective equipment. The sparing gear we have today, is one of the best things that has come along. I have met some guys from clubs that like to grapple with stick fighting. I have fought this way and used my stick to butt stoke the guy and to choke the guy out. I was told that was cheating, if this supposed to be realistic like a fight, in a fight there are no rules. I felt like I was a reserve Deputy Sheriff again. Leave grappling to wrestling, judo and jujitsu. Here is another perspective; would you become judo player and then say we need to change the rules to allow Jujitsu style fighting too? Would you become a kendo player and then say lets get rid of our gear to make it more real. No, you would not! Just as a WEKAF formed rules for the sport contests, these other martial arts have formed a sport version also. For those who are seeking an adrenalin rush and to feel what real combat is like try being US Marine, Police Officer or Deputy Sheriff. If you want to start fight club start one. If you want to cage fight then cage fight, but understand that sports are there so you have contests to try your skills and still be in one piece afterward. Leave the WEKAF rules as they are. This is his way of trying out if the technique he just learned would work for him. If not he goes back and train harder and go at it again. Master Roland Dantes was our center referee in the t.v. program called Karate Arnis Filipino. If you win a match you get rubbing alcohol for a price or a milo drink. You have to win nine successive fights to qualify for the championship at the end of the year. Master Dantes is doing fine being the sports director for Senator Lapid. I met him again last Ocober in Manila at the Gathering of the Warriors. His brother Johnny is now a pilot and Johnny's sparring partner Salvador (Badong) Alina is now in Seattle (the last I heard). The late Doc Lengson was my first Arnis instructor and also the late Captain Gil Gonzales was my karate instrucor with Master Charlie Villanueva. Can't help but it brings memories when you mentioned the names.
